What is a basic need that should be covered as rights?

I was wondering because I was talking to a conservative (who claims to be "prolife" ironically enough) and he said NOTHING is a right. I suggested that food and water is something that should be provided to EVERY American as they have the right to life when they are given citizenship at birth. He still disagreed. I am not talking about giving homeless people the most luxurious meals or steak but at the every least they deserve SOMETHING to live on. NO ONE deserves to go hungry in this country in my honest opinion.

I believe the very bare minimum should be food and water. The rest is up to you. But do you all think food and water is too much?

You have a right to receive what you pay for.

I find that your thought process of "I was wondering because I was talking to a conservative (who claims to be "prolife" ironically enough) " is quite disturbing as you have already labeled and set this person into a box you have pre-determined. not all conservatives are pro-choice as not all liberals are pro-life.

Personally I think everyone deservs food and water - as they should work for it as well.. I work for mine... I think that basic nutrition needs to take into account. Not everyone has the right to a steak dinner, but they do have the right to nutrition.

Also... I find it odd that people who feel very strongly about something such as you have stated that no one deserves to go hungry.... may have very little to share or contribute to those who are going hungry. (not to say that you haven't contributed or don't)

Well that could be taken many ways.

I pay into welfare. Does that mean I have a right to receive that? Do I have the right to buy whatever I want that is legal?

What are you talking about? And what do you think is the very basic.

In US American society, I think two very basic rights should be very affordable and accessible health care and excellent education across the board for ALL citizens.

Food and water, yes, but obviously most people are attaining this for themselves, albeit in drastically different quantities.

Feel homeless should indeed be provided with food but there needs to be systems set up to help them "rehabilitate" and engage and eventually work in society. Of course, many programs like this exist, and need to continue to do so.

I agree. They should work but what if we are talking about children who cannot work yet? What if there are no jobs like right now?

Trust me. If I could, I would. I would feed every single hungry person in this world if I could. I remember in high school, I went down to a homeless shelter and have people soup and it was amazing how much just soup made them happy. My job situation is not good or else I would have no problem doing it all over again...

I think health care is a right along with food, water, and an education. K-12 should be free and state colleges and universities should be affordable for low-income and middle-class students.

Ya know if everyone had a job, health care, education, etc we'd be a lot better off.
Everyone would be paying into the pool and no one would come up with these idiotic statements like, "I don't want to pay for your free stuff."

I didn't say it would be "free."

What about the gas tax we all pay? Waaah I hate my gas taxes are paying for roads you drive on.

Indeed. University has become a huge & industry. Should be very affordable for all classes in US American society.
