I'm all for doing away with corporate personhood and having public financing of elections.

How do we turn it around? How do we return to the small government as laid out in the Constitution? Have the American people totally tuned out opting for the remote control, swallowing the pop culture message and all its glitz over moral fortitude?

I have great concern over the direction of our country and see parallels to the state of the country at the beginning of the last century. Teddy Roosevelt was the great moralist who took on his own privileged class and sought balance. He exuded traditional American values of hard work, commitment, loyalty and honor.

Who, if anyone, could help return the government to the people of the United States?
This has been infecting both political parties for decades, and this last year they jumped the shark. now, both democrats and republicans are catching on to this, and this has been evident in the elections throughout 2009.

People need to keep in mind that politicians in both parties are selling out to special interest groups and big money, and we will see snake oil salesman claiming to be "for the people" just to get elected, then once they get in office they will sell us out, so be careful who you vote for. I'd vote for an honest democrat before I'd vote for a dishonest republican.

Conservative Republicans have been quicker to see this trend, as they refused to reelect incumbents since 2006. More and more people are seeing the rot in Washington for what it is.

Liberals and democrats have always trusted government to take care of them more then conservatives, so its only just now that some of them are catching on.

The war with the Taliban, is an example we should have learned from the Revolutionary war. Washington knew that its hard for an occupying force to maintain control. A small band of determined fighters on their own soil, halfway around the world from the land of the occupiers, can hold out almost forever.

Washington said, he didn't have to win the war, he just couldn't loose it. The Taliban are taking the same tactics. We'll never completely destroy them. The only thing we can do, is turn the land back over to its own people, in a stable manner, and hope for the best.

This is what we are actually doing now, and its the only way to win. If the people of Afghanistan don't want to be rid of the Taliban, then we'll never win.

Standing armies shouldn't be used in the manner we are using them. You topple the government, attack the terrorist camps, but thats all you can do. A war on terrorism is futile, because if one person wants to kill him/herself, and take out 100 people with them, there is little you can do to stop them.

Most of the attempted terrorist attacks on us, since 9/11, have just been botched jobs. We didn't stop them, they just screwed up. (same under both administrations BTW).

The lesson to learn, terrorism is a police action, and we are going to have to learn to live with the threat. Keep police forces on alert for it, and hope for the best. Thats our best, and only option. Wars are fought between countries, not a country, and a armed band of religious nut jobs.

A quick fix? No, it's the best place to start.
That's a good issue. An even better place to start first would be the repeal of the Federal Reserve Act, and a return of our monetary system to Congressional control as is constitutionally required. That would sever the control leverage the international gangster bankers have over all government operations and decisions ... domestic, and foreign policy too.

Then, a portion of that fraudulent interest currently being stolen by the Federal Reserve could fund national elections, eliminating all private special interest funding of elections.

Your post reminds me of the periodic debates this nation had about a national bank back in the 19th century. The Fed was created as an antidote to just what you're talking about.

Congressional control of the money system led to corruption, vote selling and political influences on the economy of America. The era of the Robber Baron's was a direct result of a politicized banking system and the Fed was created to offset that result.

Of course, the Fed is no panacea either, so where do we go from here?

Edging closer to direct democracy would be insanity, given that most of us are all too easily swayed by sound bites, attack ads, astroturf campaigns, catchy and misleading descriptions, and other shiny pretty objects. That said, the current system of politicians selling out, and at ridiculously low prices to boot (I work in Jefferson City, Missouri, and the cost of buying a state representative there is about that of a 1994 Pontiac with 150,000 miles and bald tires), is equally stupid. I really don't know. Maybe the aliens will rule us with wisdom and mercy. Or the Chinese.
