I've been to churches that were in need of major repairs. Guess what? At every single one, the pastor was driving some nice luxury car. It's not a matter of needing money. It's a matter of spending it on things other than the church. Religion makes money. Just look at L. Ron Hubbard.
L. Ron Hubbard is dead. Personally I don't consider Scientology a religion, I know others do. Yes, people have used religion to fleece others but there is always bad in with the good. As far as religion goes IMO the good outweigh the bad any day.

Scientology is a religion. It doesn't matter if it's only decades old. It still qualifies as a religion. All religions were made up at some point.
I wouldn't mind seeing most churches pay taxes. Most of them are run like businesses by greedy pastors that are in it for the money. A church just up the freeway from here has a pastor that is paid over 1million salary. It is a crying shame how many Christians are falling for the megachurch traps. It is the main reason I left the church. Watching one of my old churches decide to enlarge and rennovate, I couldn't stomach it anymore when they decided a $500k audio/video system was necessary to "enhance the worship experience". I'm still a believer and God doesn't need to be "enhanced" by a bunch of expensive equipment that could be forgotten about and instead having God's so called followers help the hungry and the poor.
I go to the Catholic church. My priest/priests get no income except a pittance to live on. The money raised for the parish goes into the church, school and paying employees.
I have gone to some who could hardly keep their doors open. When was the last time you were in a church, if I may ask? Just wondering. Those who aren't involved seem to know the most.
Then maybe they should merge.
This is about people who do a job, receive a salary and don't pay taxes on that money.
Working for your god thing, under the table.
I know some catholic priests, they get new cars every 2 years; can afford to go to more concerts than I can, travel almost as much as I do.
I'll go anecdote to anecdote with you.

What is the salary of a Catholic priest?
In New Jersey, the starting salary of a Catholic priest is between $70,000 and $75,000.
That counts a whole lot of extras counting rent, mortgage, maid, cook, $2,000/year of being a priest, about $18,000.
Starting spending money, books fees, insurance paid, car insurance etc.
Congrats on another offensive, ignorant post! Feigning tolerance while being condescending and judgemental at once -the true liberal way.
I've never feigned tolerance for such ridiculous myth followers.
This has nothing to do with being liberal or anything else; I don't think that myth believers deserve special treatment.

Yeah, their poverty sucks; it's a crying shame.
You didn't post the whole thing---
Religious priests - that is, priests belonging to a religious order - may also, like diocesan priests, receive a salary, but as they are vowed to poverty, they are not allowed to keep the salary for their own use. Any salary they receive is put into the common fund of their religiouscommunity. If they need anything, they may receive an allowance from their parish or their community according to their needs and the particular discipline of the community.
Law obliges the Church to provide for the basic necessities of all priests (religious or secular) when both 'active' and in retirement. A priest who is not bound to community life may choose, at his own expense, to live at a higher standard (in his own apartment, home, or retirement community, etc). The only way that a priest may lose these benefits is to be dismissed from the clerical state (either voluntarily by leaving or perhaps involuntarily as a consequence of being removed).
