Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Mayor Oscar Goodman has refused an invitation to meet with President Obama when he arrives in town on Thursday. Mayor Goodman called President Obama a slow learner after he told Americans not to blow money on a weekend in Las Vegas if they were saving to put their kids through college.

"I've got other things to do quite frankly for my constituents here in Las Vegas who rely on me to do the right thing as a mayor," explained Mayor Goodman.

Oscar would run his own mother over if she was in the way of promoting
Las Vegas. Obama won't take it personally. Oscar will use whatever it
takes to Promote his town - whatever it takes.

Obama ain't my daddy, my daddy's been dead for 45 years. If I can't manage my own money, I'm sure as hell not going to whine to him about it. If I mentioned it, he'd try to tell me not to restore that old Volvo, but give HIM the money, and he would "promise" me he would return it to me somewhere in the future as a stipend. BS.

got married there actually ...

I like Vegas .. it's adult disneyland. But Obama is right, parents shouldn't gamble away their children's college funds in Vegas.

Please, someone help Mr. Mayor extricate his boxers that are in a bunch.

I can just see all those tourists and gamblers stopping in their tracks at the airport, in their taxis .. checking into their hotel rooms, stopping in their tracks and going home ... ooooo, that wascally Obama.

Within 25 miles of the city limits of Vegas are some of the best national parks and mountains in the country. You also have Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and a few hours away The Grand Canyon. In the city, you have any number of shows and concerts to choose from- you can see Circus Circus tonight and Barry Manilow or Lionel Richie tomorrow. And right now, it is actually pretty reasonable money wise to go there.
My wife and I went to Vegas a couple of days after we retired. Spent a week there, but actually spent little time in the city. We don't gamble, we don't drink, we fool around only with each other ... we took in a couple of shows, but other than that, we spent most of our time on day trips ... Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Hoover Dam/Lake Mead, etc.

The only reason we went was a convention my wife wanted to attend. Otherwise, Vegas would not ever have been on our list of places to visit. I'm glad we made the trip ... for the convention (my wife thoroughly enjoyed it) and for our day trips. But Vegas itself? We won't be visiting there again. It just isn't our thing.

As for the mayor? He's entitled to his opinion, and to act like a jerk. Wouldn't be the first time he's acted like a jerk. From his wikipedia entry:
On March 3, 2005, Goodman spoke to a group of fourth-graders at Jo Mackey Elementary School. When asked what he would take with him if marooned on a desert island, the mayor replied, "A showgirl and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin." When asked about his hobbies, the mayor named drinking Bombay Sapphire Gin as a favorite. Later, when asked to comment about his statements, Goodman was unapologetic: "I'm the George Washington of mayors. I can't tell a lie. If they didn't want the answer, the kid shouldn't have asked the question." This caused an outcry from parents whose children heard the remark, and school officials said the remark was inappropriate.
Personally, I don't find anything wrong with President Obama's words:
When times are tough, you — you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.
That's just good common sense.

Be aware KevK - that there is a HIGH possibility that the State of Nevada will re-institute the State Income Tax within the next few years.

Just an FYI

That is the school that is famous worldwide for letting a 6 year old kid walk out the door unaccompanied in the middle of the day and then trying to prosecute the lady that found the kid wondering in the middle of the desert because she picked him up and took him to the police station instead of calling the police to come and get him. They tried to get her 20 years for kidnapping but the jury rightly ended that foolishness. So the parents at that school ought to be more concerned about other things than a stupid remark by a colourful politician.

I don't go to Vegas to go to church. Booze, women, and gambling. That's what Vegas was made for.

There are not hordes of women waiting in Vegas for your arrival. They are not lined up at the airport begging you to take them. And, despite popular belief, prostitution is NOT legal in Las Vegas in any way, shape or form. Gambling and booze are legal as they are in many places (I think all 3 things should be legal everywhere all the time).
