Not only are 49% of Americans opposed to passing a bill similar to the one proposed by Obama and the Democrats in the House and Senate, compared with 42% in favor, those "strongly" opposed outnumber those "strongly" in favor by 23% to 11%.

A follow-up question asked specifically about the use of a parliamentary procedure that would allow the Democratic leaders to avoid a Republican filibuster. Again, Americans are opposed by a slightly larger, 52% to 39% margin, and those opposed are more likely to feel strongly about their opinion than those in favor, 25% to 11%.

Americans Tilt Against Democrats' Plans if Summit Fails

The elected officials of the Left Wing don't care what the rest of the nation thinks, simply because, in their opinion, they're smarter than everyone else. Apparently, we as nation don't know what is good for us, and have to be treated like children and taken care of by our paternal, pseudo-intellectual elected overlords. Let's just shut up and take our medicine.

What's odd is that when asked about individual components of the bill, it's broadly supported. From Ezra Klein - Is health-care reform popular?

Is health-care reform popular?

It's pretty common for Republicans to say that health-care reform is wildly unpopular. It's not even untrue. But nor is it true, exactly. Rather, it depends on the numbers you look at, and how you interpret those numbers.
I want to show you two graphs charting the popularity of health-care reform. The first summarizes the Republican position. It's a chart from Pollster.com tallying surveys asking whether you support or oppose the health-care reform bill.

Unpopular, right? The second chart summarizes the Democratic position on this question: It tallies recent responses to polls asking about the component pieces of the health-care bill:

Popular!
Health-care reform is unpopular. But if you actually tell people what's in the health-care reform bill, then it becomes quite popular. A recent Newsweek poll found the same thing: "The majority of Americans are opposed to President Obama's health-care reform plan — until they learn the details."
------------------------------------------

I think what this shows is that the conservative 'noise' and misdirection has been effective... unfortunately.

Hey if you asked everyone if the wanted a pony 60% would say yes. Ask them if they want to pay for it not so much. Put those questions in context of the crushing debt burden we have now I think you might see some different numbers.

Opinion polls on the health care bill are meaningless. As Republicans are quick to point out - correctly, IMO - legislators don't fully understand the bill. The average American has no clue. Furthermore, I'd like to know what Gallup means by "...a bill similar to the one proposed by Obama and the Democrats..."

The Democrats were elected by the people, and now the Democrats are finally moving toward governing as they should have been all along.

If the people of America disagree with their actions, they're welcome to vote them out of office in November.

Exactly. When the shoe's on the other foot, the first thing out of a rightwinger's mouth is, "We're not a democracy!"

Hopefully they will improve the thing and ram it through. But the bill as it is now SUCKS air. Improvements would be:
1. Having an option to "buy into" Medicare regardless of age
2. Allowing people to buy drugs from Canada or other countries with high standards
3. Requiring that drug prices be negotiated by Medicare as they are with the VA now.
4. Institute a "loser pays" tort system to discourage TV lawyers junk lawsuits
5. Requiring medical doctors to post prices for each service
6. Allowing prescription drug advertising only for 30 days after a new drug is introduced.
7. Banning health insurance companies from raising premiums beyond the annual rate of inflation

What they really should do is break the bill up into smaller components and pass pieces individually, instead of pushing one large bill.

The Democrats won't do this because they're politically incompetent though.

There are various components that are easy wins, such as Drug Re-importation, that was killed because it was in the massive bill.
