Is it time to cut military spending? Absolutely!

The military has become an expensive, glorified jobs program. We are not any safer because of the wars started in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in fact, a great argument could be made that these wars have made us less safe. Terrorism is a real threat, but it's a threat that is best dealt with through law enforcement and intelligence tactics, not wide-scale military action.

At a time when the American people, led by the Tea Partiers, are very worried about out of control government spending, there seems to be little discussion about one of the biggest culprits: the military! It's time for Americans to wake up and stop regarding the issue as a third rail. There is so much wasteful spending, from $600 plungers, to ridiculous government contracts for shadow defense forces like Blackwater, that we cannot go on much longer like this.

Here's some reading:

Is America's Only Substantial Jobs Program the Military-Industrial Complex? Practically Speaking, Yes. | BuzzFlash.org

Anyone interested in further reading, simply look up "Military-Industrial Complex," a term that was coined by departing President Eisenhower and something that has been written about ad nauseum in the decades since.

very complex issue....military does help many poor and minorities get opportunities out of poor communities and it helps keep the peace and gives a ton of people jobs...we do need to shut down some bases overseas though..and that I agree with...

Good point. It's interesting that a lot of people will start howling whenever there's talk about cutting the military, but it does sound like there's a lot of waste/pork in the military.

Don't cut spending while troops are in combat. Remove troops from foreign bases and combat. Bring them home and set up bases along our nation's border with Mexico. Set the US Navy and Coast Guard to patrolling the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific to stop drug runners and illegal aliens (from Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, and other areas). Set up ground penatrating radar stations to find and destroy drug runner tunnels. Use Air Force tech and jets to intercept drug flights.

I agree. The military is like a giant industrial machine kept alive by giving it a patriotic facade, by turning foreigners into enemies...

The problem is demand. As long as so many Americans take drugs there will be people smuggling them into your country. Without demand no supply...

Your ignorance must be blissful. The military is also a tool for natural disasters to be used to save lives and help rebuild communities and restore order. But all you see is the typical liberal anti-military viewpoint. Surprised you didn't throw in the standard "baby killers" or "Murderers" insults.

So what, execute drug users? Stop the flow of both drugs and illegal aliens. Many nations use their military for border patrol/defense, including Mexico.

You don't need a military to do those things, other countries have civil organizations to do those tasks, such as Germany's THW.

Yes, Mexico is fast becoming a problem. We definitely should be stopping all that drug trafficking and human trafficking and also Mexico demands that we take care of the problem of weapons being smuggled into Mexico -- that would require closing the border.
