Wrong folder for this so this may get deleted. For anyone not watching the news I just thought to put it out there. Pretty exciting.

If they do it's because:
a) the tsunami was completely underestimated and it ends up hitting further upland (very unlikely and I am guessing impossible. Unless this becomes like that wave from the movie Deep Impact)
b) they ignored the warnings and are hanging around coastal areas.

Really, if this tsunami hits, those sirens and the evacuation system saved 1000's of lives

Hopefully, there is minimal damage or none at all.

exactly. If it proves to be a total dud, what a good "drill" though.

6 to 8 foot waves could easily wash beach goers out to sea and drown them. If they had been out in the water when the waterline retreated, who knows where they would have ended up. Good job getting the people out of harms way.

Is this sarcasm? I can't always tell.

But, the earthquake in Chile did occur in the same region that it hit in 1960 which caused the Hilo tsunami back then which was destructive. Better safe than drowned.

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being serious. Hawaii's beaches are usually filled with vacationers who come from many different parts of the world. Some of those places have no idea what retreating water like that would mean. Many people are stupid and would stand there video taping the water and maybe even going out to pick up things they may see exposed from the retreating water. The undertow could pull those beach goers back out to sea and drown them.

Ah yes. And true. Even locals were duped by the retreating water in 1960 and that's how a good number died. Undertow is a bit@h. An impartial one at that.
