Not surprising, a large portion of religious don't know anything about their own faith.

More then half of Protestants don't know that Martin Luther started the Reformation.

45% of Catholics don't know the bread and wine becomes the body and blood of Christ.

The people who know most about the basic tenets of religions were atheists and agnostics.

Survey: Atheists most knowledgeable about religion - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.com

As said in the article "level of education was the best predictor of religious knowledge". In logical continuance, a good portion of the very faithful are not well educated compared to those who question.

Lots of Americans can't name their own state capital. Or their congressional representative. I suppose you can conclude things from that, too.

Why is this in politics?

There is no American religion... where do you think this is? Iran?

Well I suppose we can't have enough of these posted strategically around the forum.

By the way, this atheist scored 100.

That's what happens when you have a bunch of religious freaks, indoctrinated into their "faith" as children....and never asking where all this fairy tale garbage came from.

Considering the screaming of the religious right that Obama is a closet Muslin, screaming that Atheists are evil because they don't go to church, and impacts into political thought in Intelligent Design/Abortion/Homeschooling/homosexual rights/etc...it is a political factor. Especially the crazy fundamentalists who wish for a US theocracy like Iran.

Didn't know there was other threads, but considering all the factors above the religious right has become a political voice in the US.

This is a really good point. In general, I think that most people just find it easier to let someone else decide for them what is right and what isn't when it comes to both religion and politics, and end up blindly following. I'm certainly guilty of political laziness, though I'm at least honest about that point.
