$1000 fines for people carrying knives

People caught carrying illegal knives on the street will be slapped with $1000 on-the-spot fines under the latest Victorian crackdown on violence.
The Victorian government has also expanded search and seizure powers to enable police to conduct random weapons searches in designated public areas, such as train stations, without notice.

Certain types of people want to carry weapons. If they cannot get guns then they go for knives. Where I grew up, in Scotland, knife crime was and is a significant problem and I guess Australia has the same issues. The only advantage over gun use is that the outcome is less likely to be fatal. Usually it is young males, often drunk or in gangs, and knife related injuries tend to be common on Friday and Saturday nights when they have been out drinking.

God bless the European countries that are bucking the trend of anti-gun nutjobs. Austria, Finland, Switzerland, Czech...we salute you!

Yeah it's unfortunate but they do need to crack down on this. It's got way out of hand.

AT least I can see the point to this as opposed to what happened with our gun laws.

Come live here and get back to me, ok?

I don't agree with the gun ban, never have.

As far as I can see we're not banning knives we're searching and fining people found with them for no good reason on public streets. Different thing entirely.

AND I can quite imagine that I won't be getting searched.

If it targets the *******s that ARE terrorizing the rest of the population and spending all their time using knives (and there's a lot of them round here now) then GOOD. When children are being stabbed to death in the schoolyard, we have a problem. A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM in terms of our civil liberties and big brother is this BS government sanctioned "testing" of stun guns. Now there's a ****ty way to deal with your citizens that we could well do without.

It's high time that young men in a particular age group cottoned on that the rest of us living here are sick and tired of being held to ransom by their drunken, violent, racist, bullying rages.

IF you've got a knife and you don't want a fine then don't leave the house with it. Simple.

IF you don't want to be searched then I'd suggest NOT frequenting the areas most likely to come under police scrutiny. SIMPLE.

American constitution doesn't apply here. Our culture is different, our violence epidemic is different and therefore our response needs to be different to that which you would take. As far as I'm aware we're not the 51st state yet so I'm also not aware that we need your approval.
