Congressional budget referees say Senate legislation that’s now the foundation for President Barack Obama’s health care plan would cut the federal deficit by $118 billion over 10 years.
The Congressional Budget Office says the $875 billion, 10-year plan would provide coverage to 31 million people who’d otherwise be uninsured. And it says the cost would be more than offset in savings from changes in Medicare and other programs.

So, I still don't understand those who argue that we "can't afford" health care reform right now. Can't afford to spend less money????

The Bill expands the Federal Budget by less than 1%.

But combined with cuts in other areas and some revenue generation here and there it does wind up bringing more money than it costs.

This fact is almost unknown because Democrats are so lame in selling the benefits.

They let the wingnuts define it as some big socialist expansion of government.

This is a recalculation of the senate bill that passed in Dec.

More federal spending in the first ten years and less deficit reduction, which was $132 Billion over 10 years.

Again, the problem is the gimmicks the dems employ to get a moderately good score (although, I don't think another trillion in spending through taxation and cuts is good by any means).

The gimmick of 10 years of taxation to 6 years of services doesn't ring false to you?

The CBO score for this supposed "new" bill from obama, which puts off one of the major revenue streams till 2018 (the cadillac tax) will be interesting to see when the score comes out.

so a plan that would almost double what medicare costs anuually (500 billion a year) would lower the 1.5 trillion dollar defict by 118 billion.........hmmmm

me thinks the 'new' math is interesting

The CBO scores on the assumptions the bill makes. This bill assumes that $500 billion will be cut from Medicare. That's never going to happen and everybody knows it. So right there the CBO projections are off by half a trillion.

Poor old wingnut thinks he's being hornswallgled again! Tarnation!

[ Too clueless to know the CBO over estimated the bank bailout and over estimated the 2009 Budget Deficit.]

But this time the CBO is givin us the "liberal" numbers! He just knows it!.....LOL

It also assumes that the people writing the bill are being truthful in the first place. They are not. Therefore any "scoring" is meaningless.

"that's never goint to happen and everybody know it"

Because Hannity told you and Hannity never lies....LOL

Clueless, ignorant wingnuts can't even begin to present an argument.

The CBO overestimated the bank bailout.

The CBO overestimated the 2009 Federal Budget Deficit.

But this time the CBO can't be trusted. They are going to underestimate the cost of the Health Care Bill!.................Hannity told them!

What does Hannity have to do with anything?

Anyway, as for your "CBO overestimated this" and "CBO overestimated that" argument, answer this - how did our fine representatives and lawmakers do when they planned the Cash for Clunkers program? Wasn't that supposed to go for months, and run out of money in something like two weeks?

I think the point is that the feds are always wrong. Sometimes they're wrong one way, and sometimes they're wrong the other way. Usually, they vastly underestimate what things will cost, and with something as monstrously expensive as health care, being off by even a few percent could be catastrophic.
