There is a lot of talk, mostly from conservatives, about balancing the federal budget.

My question is, can this really be done without SUBSTANTIAL cuts to defense spending?

I have a hard time seeing conservatives supporting those kind of moves. So are they being disingenuios when they say that we need to balance the budget and quit deficeit spending?

They are saying social services need to be eliminated, but we need to keep spending on the war machine. It works well because it forces more poor people to join the military so that they can survive and protect the interests of the elite.

I think Tony Benn said something like "Try telling a military general that he can't bomb Baghdad because we're overbudget. God forbid that should happen!"

This would call for Obama to cut the Income Tax. most of which is pocketed by the criiminals in Washington and he can't have that happen Since Some tend to think Income Tax is what pays for the Defense budget..

so what do we do now?

Our government is set up to have full charge of our military.
It is not set up to take care of the people. The people are suppose to take care of the people.

Get rid of the illegal aliens sucking us dry.
Get rid of Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare.
Get rid of Social Security.
Get rid of all federal involvement in welfare.
But most of all, get rid of NAFTA & the WTO/GATT

Leave the military alone.

A strong offense and you will never have to be on the defense.

Income Taxes are already comparatively low.

People want lots of things, but no one wants to pay for any things. If the trends continue, we will go down a path of hyper privatization and deregulation. Then our money will be in the hands of business owners, big and small.

I don't believe the ordinary American family trusts the business owner any more or less than they trust the politician, but I don't believe anyone has any alternative answer, and so nothing will change.

To stimulate the economy, money needs to be put in the hands of businesses or taxes need to be raised. But nobody can hold office or win office saying those things. The number one question for anything going on these days is going to be, "OK. But how do we pay for it?"

Doesn't matter who says it -- from the right or the left. Nobody knows how to pay for anything. Right wants to do something -- left says we can't pay for it: it's irresponsible. Left wants to do something -- right says we can't pay for it: it's irresponsible. And round the bend we go.

It is broken, perhaps without possibility for repair, perhaps to the point of the entire slate needing to be wiped clean. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can't imagine realistically forecasting the type of economic recover we'd all need, no matter who is in charge, unless there is a drastic political revolution, or the general public is willing to trust something in which to invest.

It is impossible to balance the budget without cutting the massive military budget.

I thnik CBO director just talked about this yesterday. He bascailly said that since the 90's we have cut militray spending to the point that it can't be a real help in the future deficits or budget redcution s like in times past.As a per cenatge of the fedweral spening it is very low. That is quite different than spending o the wars in Iraq and afgansitan. i would say if anyhting with our redcued numbers in the military and the burden they need to be better rewarded not less so.
