It should be a closed bid. IF Tax dollars are going to finance the project then only US corporations should be eligible.
And that stimulus bill should have had e-verify in it and only be spent in the US. But that didn't happen, did it ? The e-verify and US only got removed.
Given the US would have to build a lot of tracks and stations anew anyway, I wonder if it would make sense to jump the traditional HS technology and go for the next generation, the Maglev technology. Since that technology is much rarer and to a certain extent still in development, US companies could team up with foreign developers and thus catch up quite fast, even producing the stuff on their own a couple of years down the road.
Would Americans use such trains even if they existed?
That is a good point. I really doubt it looking at the cost and heavy subsidy that is required for AmTrak. But several transit trains are plnanned within states to get those that live i sub-burbs into cities. mastly because many busineses are moving to where the poeple live outside the cities.
will the insanity ever end? are our politicians such cowards that they will continue down this losing road for america? the more we import, the deeper our debt load is yet our own government is importing more labor into our country and asking us to pay for it on a proposition that has traditionally lost money.
amtrak is losing money on MOST of its rail lines. if there was an actual demand, private enterprise would be fronting the money but they are not, so the lucky taxpayers get to do it, with interest, of course.
AMTRAK is the poor step son of the American Railroad system. Except for the dense corridors on the coasts passenger trains are shunted aside for freights. Based on an a recent article in TRAINS magazine even the high speed freight specials don't average more then 25 mph from California to NY. High speed rail simply cannot use the existing rail system because of the speed conflict and track alignment requirements.
HSR between the coastal cities is a given. If we want HSR between inland cities we will have to build dedicated tracks. Given this requirement why limit our HSR to 300 mph. If the track is entirely separated from any other tracks and without road crossings the speed should be based on engineering considerations of power, stability and safety. I believe 500 mph is possible with some research and development. If dedicated nuclear power plants are used for the energy required these trains can be operated with out using coal or petroleum.
This is the sort of industrial support program this country really needs. It can replace making weapons for expensive colonial wars in the Mid East in providing good paying industrial jobs. The rails have to be made here and the train sets should be as well. We have already sent too much of our industry overseas for our economic and political good and a major, on the interstate highway system level, in country project would revitalize our civilian economy. China need not, and should not, be involved.
This video shows the slowness & Fast paced parts of the NEC in New England , the NIMBY's are the main issue on why the NEC in CT hasn't been upgraded intill this year. Eventually top speeds of 180mph and averages of 160-170mph will be in place. Also an extension south to Richmond and Charlotte by 2025 is planned. The Rhode Island & Mass Parts are 150mph. The NJ,PA,DE,MD parts are 130 (future 160-80mph)
Oh, please. You might want to look at the Bush family and their ties if you're going to make this partisan.
