We give our elderly SS and medicare.

What if they only get one or the other.

One year you choose SS, the next you choose free medical.

Would it lower the debt?

yea, but what about all those people who have been paying into the system for decades that would get cut off, right before it's time to collect their benefits? Is that fair?

Meson, my thoughts exactly! I guess some of the elderly would be faced with the choice of getting SS benefits (for which they paid) so they'd have some money for food and rent or housing of some sort, or medical treatment. I would think if they couldn't afford food and housing, for one year, then they might get really sick and need LOTS of medical benefits the next year.....a sort of race to see which year would kill them. You gotta laugh when you see such lack of compassion, greed, and selfishness on the part of so many people these days! What else can you do! They're such idiots.

I don't pretend to know the answers to how to fix the broken SS and Medicare systems, but if you look at the data, it's alarming.
Social Security and Medicare Projections: 2009 | Publications | National Center for Policy Analysis | NCPA

Quote:
Can Higher Taxes Solve the Prob*lem? The CBO also found that if federal income tax rates are adjusted to allow the government to continue its current level of activity and balance its budget:
  • The lowest marginal income tax rate of 10 percent would have to rise to 26 percent.
  • The 25 percent marginal tax rate would increase to 66 percent.
  • The current highest marginal tax rate (35 percent) would rise to 92 percent!
Conclusion. The Social Security and Medicare deficits are on a course to engulf the entire federal budget. If our policymakers wait to address these growing debts until they are out of control, the solutions will be drastic and painful.
Clearly, cuts need to be made somewhere.

We have paid over $100,000 towards our SS and we would gladly take 80% of that in cash if the gov wanted to buy us out. With what we threw away with the stimulous scheme I think the gov could have done something like that and we could save quite a bit. We just don't think SS or Medicare will even be there in 6 years.

Well if that "revolution" Beck and others keep preaching happens maybe most folks will be dead anyway in six years.

So, first you don't know the answer, and then...shazaaam!!!...you do! Neat trick. How about we separate the two programs. Social Security is actually fine as is unless the recession last another ten years or so. Otherwise, a nip here and a tuck there and it's good to go. The only thing wrong with Medicare meanwhile is the health care system it's plugged into. This is one of the reasons why it's important to pass the health care bill, so write your Congressperson and tell him or her to vote for the thing....

You cant end entitlements overnight.
But you can phase them out.
SS should be removed anyone who has paid into SS should get a big check back from the government anyone under 50. Those over 50 will get their SS check as planned. Anyone born from the date moving forward of the phase out should no longer be in SS. SS numbers will be removed and if you want to work you can use a working id number for tax reasons. We will pay what is needed to those who are already on SS until they die and then that is it. Medicare will be phased out only until you can find something that can replace this system. American needs to figure out what they are doing with all this money, in waste and actually assistancing people who just finding ways to run peoples lives. I think it might be time to shut down the 700 bases we have around the world. Even if you wanted to continue SS or medicare and the world empire of American Democracy. WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM your 12 trillion in debt. So as much as the neocons and socialist would like to spend money the next question will be what money. Its going to end not matter what crazy ideas you have because the costs and money its there.

Excuse me? How does saying that cuts need to be made somewhere then equate into "I am omniscient and have all the answers"?

Things are NOT fine the way they are, and it will be a fat chance in hell when I call my elected officials to ask them to support this boondoggle of a health insurance bill.
