For a movement that frets so much about the “burden of federal taxation,” Tea Party adherents have a remarkably dim understanding of what they actually fork over to Washington. In a recent survey of anti-tax activists in Washington Tuesday, tea partiers thought, on average, that 42% of GDP goes to federal taxes. The actual number depends on how you calculate it, but the highest possible figure is 14.8.%, writes Bruce Bartlett.

maybe they object to ALL the taxation that the government imposes:

and the fact that they aren't getting very much bang for their bucks.

what an ignorant posting! This is not news, it is an opinion piece that mentions a survey, but never gives details of it (the details reveal it was conducted by non-professionals from frumforum. That's some authoritative people if ever I've heard of any). It mentions a writer for Forbes, but the link is to an epinion piece. A guy that wrote something to Forbes; drrrrrrrrrrrrrr. It is garbage like this that fools the fools and makes something out of nothing. I'm sure there will be at least 10-20 of the seriously ignorant CD posters jumping all over this because they like the title and the accompanying blurb. They of course won't bother to look at it and instead will believe it 100% because it's on the intraweb.

I could've swore lemmings were supposed to jump off cliffs and be gone for good...

BTW, how many people know the first thing about GDP and how much actual taxes they pay? Maybe .5% of the entire population? Most just care about how much they "get back".

I agree there's an appalling ignorance about economics, but if you're going to haul off to DC to protest, you ought to have the facts in hand.

I'm sure they are very well aware of what they pay in taxes. While the % of GDP might be wrong, its rather close to what some individuals pay in total tax liability, if not underestimated as a % of income..

Did you read it? The "survey" was conducted on barely 50 freaking people by an online forum with an obvious agenda.. You don't really need a statistics class to immediately dismiss that as not a good representation nor professional.

but why bother with facts and the truth eh? Headlines are much more exciting...

no, no, no.. if you remember Lemmings correctly, you need to save them from falling off cliffs, very similar to the current argument by liberals to "save us all"...

I guess we do need people to work at McDonalds.
