Amtrak Planning Major Push to Operate True High-Speed Lines « The Transport Politic

Alot of us in the Rail community believe that Speeds up to 220mph would be very easy to do South of Newark,NJ where the Tracks are straighter. As these next 2 Maps show you , there are alot of issues to fix and resolve before upgrading to 220mph happens. Also Amtrak has plans to upgrade and extend the Keystone Corridor to Pittsburgh and Cleveland with top speeds of 140mph, form the Top speed of 110mph and average of 100mph. The CT Section is very curvy and we need a complete overhaul west of New Haven. More Tracks will be needed North of Washington DC to Philly. (3-6) Constant Catenary wire tension and pole replace will be needed most of the Corridor to handle speeds above 160mph. Amtrak's Ridership along the Keystone & Northeast Corridor has been growing steadily over the past year.

So what do you guys think about this?

Very good news!

Hopefully the network will continue to work its way South.. NEC Regional trains already reach as far South as Lynchburg, VA and will reach Raleigh, NC in the next few years. With speeds of 220mph we are still falling short of Europe but it sure is a good start!

The Northeast & Keystone Corridors actually are the only 2 lines that make profit by slightly.

Some examples of Amtrak Speeds on the Northeast Corridor.

The Speed limit South of Newark,NJ now is 130mph max heres a 125mph Acela in Maryland.

YouTube - Amtrak Acela Express Through Edgewood at 125mph.

2 Amtraks in a 130mph Zone in NJ

YouTube - Amtrak & NJ Transit 3-way Meet

Amtrak Acela Express @ 150mph in Rhode Island.

YouTube - 2 Acelas at Kingston 150MPH Shave and a Haircut!

The New Acela's will go this fast (average ) and reduce the time by at least 1.30 hrs between NY-Was & NY-Bos.

YouTube - 186mph Eurostar blasts through Kent, England on the new High Speed 1

& Top speed will look like this , the TGV and Acela makers are the same.

YouTube - TGV 350 km/h - 220 m/h

Should there be ANY traffic between NYC and WN, DC?

Those two towns should be off limits to each other.

Well that line will be privately funded , but compared to the NEC & CHSR it wouldn't be used as much.

I'm confused? The NEC Corridor is used by at least 550,000 daily.

More train crap when in reality people want the independence and freedom of their own vehicles. I lived in France for 5 years and I can tell you that using public transportation sucks horribly.

That being said, if it will logistically work anywhere in America it will in the Northeast due to smaller distances.

I just wish the tax-dollar money pit Amtrak wasn't running it.
