Not that it would have mattered since he did not have enough votes for it anyway, but because the bill did not fit the rules of Reconciliation, 60 votes would have been needed to set aside the Rules of the Reconciliation Act of 1974 to pass the Amendment. The Amendment failed 36-59 .

Obviously, not all Democrats think alike, but the numbers are clear: Democrats support same-sex marriage and civil unions in much greater numbers than Republicans.

Good. Another loss for the anti-gay crowd. They like to brag about all of their "wins", so I think it would be good to start crowing a little more whenever they lose, as they have today.

But clearly the anti-gay marriage ploy was just an attempt to stir-up their hateful base. That's how Republicans operate by always trying to divide people from each other and then preaching their godless religious nonsense.

The roll call isn't online yet, but I have C-Span on. I may have missed a few of the votes, but it appears that no Democrats voted in favor and at least two Republicans (Collins and Snowe) voted against it.

That is a very telling vote. Both Maine's senators are Republican in a left-leaning state that recently experienced the same kind of bigotry that California had to deal with Prop 8. Smart politicians know what the pulse of the country is and if they want a continuing future in politics then they need to play it safe. Two Republican senators who voted against health care reform is not going to be easily forgot in Maine & may cost the GOP their last New England state. The spectacle of the Republican hordes spitting at, swearing racial and sexual slurs at Americans is a picture that has had major negative impact on the GOP. Some politicians are desperately trying to distance themselves from the "voice" of the Republicans: Palin\ Limbaugh\ Bachmann\ Beck. Already a former Bush speech-writer commented that the Republican party is Fox News at its worse for inflaming violence and crazy ignorance. This is really bad news for the GOP.

While the two have voted with the Republicans on most of these Amendments, on a few of them they have joined with the Democrats on several of the proposed Amendments, Voinovich has joined on a couple as well I believe.
