It's not paranoia, it's based on plenty of world history. None of these things happen overnight in general, but it's a gradual hand over of freedoms.
Maybe it is simply a development, things can't stay the same forever. The further back you go in time, the fewer people the US had, the less important it was as a country, the more people could do what they wanted without consequences for society or the environment. So it doesn't really make sense to compare the freedoms 200 years ago with today's. Back then people were also free to have slaves, free to have children work in factories etc.
