Is there any such university? High text prices as well as an unsupportable work load are two of the ways academia "weed out" many of the freshman class. Preserving the exclusivity is more important than educating students.
Almost everyone agrees that the student loan reform is a good thing. Even though there will be jobs lost that is a side effect of efficiency and cost cutting. There was no reason to subsidize private lenders, it was just gravy we can no longer afford.
Interesting- I wonder if that's what they'll keep saying when medical device manufacturers and large corporations like AT&T start layoffs due to Barry Care.
This Country and it's Govt, should do everything it can, to spur, aid and influence people to get higher education. The long term economic benefits of doing that are, undisputed. Hey, if more had been done 10, 20, 30 yrs ago, we would likely see a lot more productive conversations in places like, this forum?

I agree with you. Too bad many of the people aren't as educated as myself.
I think Reason.TV hits the nail on the head with this. They have a more recent one as well but I am having difficulty finding it. Basically, the administration is throwing money at a symptom and not correcting the root cause (just like they do with everything), which makes things worse in the long run. About time this cute little subsudy was eliminated. Most of the aid should be in the form of grants not loans. Now to start controlling the prices of text books. The publishers have abused their monopoly for far too long.
Text books I can agree with those prices are not market prices or any other prices they are just a monopoly!
Finally we agree on something. Maybe each course or college bookstore should have at least two texts or the same text from two suppliers. Then the suppliers could try to increase market share through price reduction. Right now texts are sold on an "all the traffic will bear" basis.

The government essentially eliminated the subsidies years ago when they cut them down to near zero for private lenders. That didn't make loans any more accessible or affordable; it caused the shut down of tons of private lenders. Many students were left out in the cold and couldn't get the funds needed to go back for additional semesters.
The government offers no incentives for taking out the loans like private lenders did; as such, the net cost of attending school will effectively increase. I'm happy to provide the math if you don't get how that's possible.
Before, students had choices, could shop for a lender in most cases. Now, they have to fall in line with what the government wants, even if it's not financially in the student or parents' best interests.
Bottom line - people are going to spend more money for the same product. There was no savings to be had. If a student defaults on a loan, it's still 97% subsidized. The money just goes back into making more loans like it did before. The government has duped people into believing that there's a savings here. There really isn't.
Just wondering, will they look at grades to decide if you are eligible?
