President Obama did not lie. I have doubts as to how fast this going to take place. According to the article, environmental and geological studies could take years. Actual drilling in much of the newly opened areas, if it takes place, would not begin for years.
Also, representatives of both parties in coastal states (Florida, Alabama) are not happy. Apparently, the President believes by supporting expanded drilling he will win support from undecided senators close to the oil industry, like Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, or Democrat Mary Landrieu of Louisiana for upcoming energy and climate legislation.
Excellent article from the NYT:

Mr. Obama said several times during his presidential campaign that he supported expanded offshore drilling. He noted in his State of the Union address in January that weaning the country from imported oil would require “tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development.” Obama to Open Offshore Areas to Oil Drilling for First Time - NYTimes.com
At least you can't accuse C-D right-wingers of being inconsistent in their childishness. What Obama has proposed is modifications to the existing ban -- relaxing it here, strengthening it there, and leaving it unchanged in other places. McCain during the 2008 campaign and the doofus Republicans in their embarrassingly inane Drill-Baby-Drill stunt during the August 2008 Congressional recess were arguing for REMOVAL of the ban entirely. That is quite a different thing to a non-dunce. The proposed relaxations meanwhile have nothing to do with any campaign remarks made by Obama in 2008 about prohibiting drilling off the coast of Florida. In insisting that it does, right-wingers are attempting here to employ all the logic and reason of Steven Wright when he noted that everywhere is within walking distance if you have enough time.

Now people know I don't like the current or last administrations, but I do like a response like you give even when I disagree because you do bring your side of the story and your references into it, and you seem not to get caught up in all the name calling. I like your style.

This is a direct quote from the beloved leftie CNN so it must be
Obama quote
"When I'm president, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida's coasts," Obama told reporters in Jacksonville in late June. "That's how we can protect our coastline and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good."

All those idiots who thought they were voting for change are going to have to come to grips with the fact that they have put their hopes in another bought and paid for politician who takes his marching orders from big business. When will they realize it does not matter if they call themselves democrats or republicans they are all the same. The only hope this country has is to reject both parties and put some people in office that have not sold their souls to big business years ago. Independents, libertarians, green party, any one except the career politicians who are paid to screw the people.

Honestly, how many people voted for Obama because he said was against offshore drilling?
I voted for him and I strongly support offshore drilling.

The environmentalists thought he was supporting their position. Wrong. The anti war crowd thought he would end the wars. Wrong. The out of work people thought he would improve the economy. Wrong. When it comes down to it, he is only doing what is good for Banks, oil companies, insurance companies and the like. The American people are being screwed, there is no doubt about that, but the Obama groupies refuse to admit it.
