We need to move in a more European way. There is a trade off between freedom and security. Not just security from foreign enemies but from economic ruin or a turn to bad health. I think we have erred a bit too much on the freedom side and now we are looking for a bit more security.
So you think it is right that only 3 out of 10 housholds are independent of government welfare and not only provide fore themselves but for those who are producing nothing?

Please, if Europe is what you want, go there and stay.
You must mean the "Exceptional Freedom" to die in the street because you cannot afford healthcare or the"Exceptional Freedom" that means you cannot get a decent job because of no access to good education by millions in America today.
you are free to go out and buy your own, but you are not free to force another to pay for your insurance for you.

Rep machine wouldn't let me bump ya.
And I posted that same quote in response to the "Patriot Act" BTW
Kev has said some intelligent things here, but "a trade off"????
Really?
You give up your liberties. I plan on clenching ahold of mine.
We haven't had 'exceptional freedom' for a while. Most modern countries are just as free as we are. Any 'freedoms' that we have which they don't are very minor and inconsequential, and in fact several have freedoms that we don't have. It's rather arrogant to suggest that we are the only ones with freedom.
Well this is what you get when you say make me feel good to the politicians instead of make a good place for me to raise my family. Heroin makes you feel good. Penicillin makes you better. We need penicillin not heroin. We are government freebies junkies.

Having lived in the US for 8 years and Europe for 30, I confess to being a tad baffled about what those "exceptional freedoms" are. It's a nice country and all, I enjoy living here, but apart from the gun thing, I really haven't noticed that I'm exceptionally free.
FWIW, I've just returned from a business trip to Amsterdam, and going from a town where people walked down the street smoking a joint without being bothered to the Immigration booth at LAX where I was duly fingerprinted and grilled on my immigration status - well, let's just say it was an interesting contrast.
