Generally speaking, how do you feel about politicians switching parties? Do you feel differently if the politician is leaving your party rather than coming to it? Would you vote for a politician, in your party's primary, who switched parties?
Ever know any politicians who switched political parties when they were not up for re-election?
Is there anyone (Senate/House/President/Governor) that you think belongs in a different political party?
Interesting thread,it pitches logic & morality versus ...realpolitik...
Originally,I believe everyone thinks of a switcher/defector as a traitor...
An opportunist, carreerist, who goes with the flow, who betrays ( ? ) the will of his voters...
However,in reality, the "traitors " receive the hero's welcome from the opposite party & many of them get (re) elected by their new party.
So,certainly the people/voters do not punish them. They stage a political hit & -mostly- they succeed...
Let's see if Specter succeeds now in PA,they way Liebermann succeeded in CT...
When I think of party switchers the king of that comes to mind and that was Wendall Wilkie. He coined one of my favorite phrases "There is not a dimes difference between either party" Wilkie was living proof of his words,he started out as a {D} and then switched over to the {R}s and ran for POTUS and lost to FDR.While FDR was POTUS,Wilkie switched back to being a {D} and did work in the FDR administration.
I do not think switching is all that effective today,Pa still has the choice to send Spector back same guy just with a different label.
I would like to see the two lady Senators from Maine make a switch since they mostly vote with the {D}s and are not fiscally conservative.
To me, switching parties is akin to girls moving from state to state to run in beauty pageants where they think they have a better chance of winning. I lose a lot of respect for party switchers whether they're coming in or going out of a party.
I always wonder why don't they try to improve the party they are in rather than opt out.
