Hummers are obnoxious for a standardized road/ parking lot. They're used as status symbols in areas where their utility would never be called for to justify their existence. That's not about politics, it's pure vanity. How goofy does that 4'6" oriental lady look trying to see over the steering wheel? What a foolish way to burn money is all I see, but if it's your dime, I'm certain my opinion doesn't matter. I've only heard of a hummer being useful in one instance-- a lady from cali drove it all the way to new orleans to help out katrina victims. That might justify a % of emergency response crews and military, but not everyday commuting.
Prius to me is like a dream trying to manifest itself as practical. There was a time when everyone was so excited at the opportunity to have an 8-track in their car because playing a 45 lp wasn't going to work and waiting on a disk jockey to play anything that wasn't top 40 was never going to happen. For some people it really is everything they need but I'm not one of those people. I might have gone with the camry hybrid if the waiting list weren't 16 months long at the time. I'd love to see it grow up, but things are going so slowly. Hard to be patient knowing so much technology existed years ago and was stifled to hell in a hand basket.
I think consumers like myself who haven't taken the plunge yet intuitively know we can do better and want to see that come through via capitalist market, but it seems that government r&d always precipitates the leapfrogging of technology (space, cell phones, gps, computers, etc). We all might hold our noses over the catchall term subsidy, but good for the goose is good for the gander- let's hold that same standard of thinking to microsoft and verizon. We gave them a freebie leg up and they ran with it intelligently. I want to see american genius rise to it's propers again.
Sure, it's just as goofy as that japanese lady needing a stepping stool to get in an SUV seeing a 6'8" 300lb man trying to stuff himself in a prius as if a clown car, knees around the steering wheel. Freedom of choice and allowing the market demand to decide should be on the lips of all sides. I doubt prius type vehicles are ever going to be very useful to extreme rural populations.
Owning a prius= eco terrorist? Wow that is wackaloon to the tenth power. I guess that's why they feel the need to be Stalin and suppress the availability of any alternative on the shelf. Champions of the American way.
I'm a libertarian so I drive what I wish and not based upon my politics. I drive a Prius as my daily driver. I have a 38 mile round trip drive to work everyday, so I like it for that. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe that I use for going up in the mountains. Soma of the places I go hiking or mountain biking require a 4WD to get to. Plus, in winter, that vehicle gets me everywhere I want to go. It's great for lugging my skis, bike, and hiking gear...and the dogs. Then I have my toy...a 2004 Corvette. That's just for fun and only drive it about 3,000 miles per year.
Choosing cars on politics is dumb.

What makes them obnoxious? To some that own them an H1 is the Ultimate vehicle, We were rear ended in one, the offending minivan could not drive away, it bent the license plate on our H1.
I unfortunately misread the poll as saying "which do you hate more" and voted for the Prius. For the record, I really dislike Priuses (Prii?) and I like Hummers a lot more. I would never drive a Prius, but I probably wouldn't drive a Hummer either (not practical for where I live)
I don't plan to buy a Prius because it looks like it fought and lost a battle with Captain Ugly or a Hummer that looks like a Jeep Cherokee with elephantiasis. However, I do favor the Prius over the Hummer because, the more people who buy this sad piece of mediocrity, the less demand there will be for gasoline and the less I have to pay to fill the tank on my old 3/4 ton, V8 GMC Sierra truck.

I think it's exactly that kind of 'Beyond the Thunderdome' type attitude that many find obnoxious.
Not to mention, do you really need to drive a tank to do your shopping or pick the kids up from soccer practice?
I mean...really? Are you that afraid of the world around you? Do you live in a castle with a drawbridge as well?
I can't see why anyone would seriously be offended by a prius.
Who's it gonna hurt? A hummer on the other hand is a deadly weapon and
(global warming aside) produces more smog and exhaust and just looks big
and 'honkin' and desperate for attention if you ask me.
Plus, you know what they say about men that need a BIG manly truck
(or tank in this case) to compensate for a small, um, elbow, right?
