I've seen reports where "red states" contribute more money than "blue states" to charity.
I think there are books out there where conservatives are well known to contribute to charity more so than liberals.
So don't you find it ironic than true die hard liberals are always stating they want to help the poor but they hard much less likely to contribute than conservatives?
Personally I'm a fiscal conservative. Generally vote Republicans but have voted for fiscal Democratic political candidates in the past.
My first part time paycheck (this was making $4/hr ) when I was a teenager, my parents forced me to give $25 of it to the local hospital cause it helps the community. So you can't make the excuse you don't have money to donate.
Now I am in my 30s, I make much more, my cash contributions are growing the more I make. I contributed over $7K last year to non profits (mainly hospital, ALS organization, both my wife and my universities). That's not including the free work I do on weekends with my volunteer work.
To me, it just seems like the liberals are contradicting themselves when they don't participate in what they preach: that's to help the poor. They just want the government to take money from others and give it back to the poor. Liberals don't believe the private sector can do as good a job as the public sector in helping the poor.
If Obama/Democrats hits me with an extra $2-5K in extra taxes, I'd rather not pay that tax and just contribute that extra money to the charities I believe in. Cause I would know where that money is going. If I give it back to the government, who knows what they will waste it on.
All one has to do is look to their leader Adolf Obama to find the selfish ways.
He made 4-5 million last year and only donated a few thousand dollars.
You have to understand most liberals believe in the Robin Hood theory of steal from the successful people and hand it to the losers we have to support.
Who Really Cares • Arthur C. Brooks (http://www.arthurbrooks.net/whoreallycares/excerpt.html - broken link)
Republicans give more money, blood and time than Democrats.
If Liberals donated blood as much as Conservatives, the blood supply would increase by 45%.
Seems that liberals rely on the government to provide charity. Conservatives would rather give directly.
Thanks for the link to the book. I knew I saw it somewhere before.
I don't mind paying my portion of taxes. The thing that bugs me is that when government raises taxes (we all know government will raise taxes very soon), it's often times misappropriated to wrong areas.

A very good thread. IMHO the left want government to be the great social net. Conservatives want individuals.
the left believes their taxes should take care of all, the right think individuals should.
So I think the Right gives much more based on their own beliefs
I think we are in the RED on this, but do we here enough about this. If we were in the Blue, you know we would be hearing much more on this subject. I think the republicians give more sweat time to, but do we here about that.
When church charity is excluded, liberals give more. As a center left Independent, I absolutely DO NOT give to church charities. Most of it goes to building maintenance, salaries and whatnot, not to actually help anyone. I give my time to a local women's shelter and my local Cooperative Extension office. I may not be able to give a lot of money, but I give a lot of time. I can't give blood due to a genetic issue, but the rest of my family is able too.
Kind of funny that what tips conservatives over liberals is giving to 'charities' that directly benefits themselves...kinda selfish, don't you think?

Isn't it still giving to charity? I don't think what charities makes a difference plus only part of what you say about where the money goes is true. Of course it goes to salaries, do you think the leaders work for nothing or the churches get built and maintained without money and do you think other charities do not use a good part of our donations for the same things? Who pays the salaries for thsoe who work at the women's shelters? I know a person who was the exc director of one in NM, she didn't starve on her salary..
Many of us give as much time as money because we have more of one than the other. For those who choose to give to their church, if church was not a place they gave they would give to other charities.
Agree. Factor out charity to churches; as a percentage of income, conservatives still give more to secular causes than liberals.
No matter how you try to slice it, bottom line is that conservatives are more generous than liberals.
