The military does the same thing, and so do lab workers. They distort words to make their dirty deeds seem less dastardly. Only they aren't so amusing.

I think it simply that some people refuse to accept the reality of the issue and using the accurate words to such only continues to remind them of it. So, they create alternate words that lessen the impact of reality and allows them to convince themselves that the issue is not as severe as reality states.
