I hope he kept his political views out the classroom but with this guy's obsession with this group, I rather doubt it.

The guy is probably stupid enough to think you need a hard hat to mine data. As someone who mines data professionally with state of the art machine learning techniques, he doesn't have a clue on how it works. You'd need sampling data from the entire country and a much higher dimensionality of data than what he's suggesting. Also, SSN contains practically zero entropy on making that determination.
