The measure, which would continue added unemployment benefits and other expired federal programs through May, will restore aid to thousands of Americans who had exhausted their benefits or whose eligibility was expiring. The legislation means that those out of work can receive up to 99 weeks of unemployment pay in some states. It will restore benefits to anyone who may have lost pay during a two-week interruption in the program.

Democrats said that many out of work Americans were unable to find jobs and that delaying what for some is their sole income in a political fight over spending was unconscionable. They say the money should be treated as an emergency expense.

Didn't know that. I thought we pay for ourselves as in the unemployment insurance that we pay every month that we are employed.

every place I look at has 'help ante ' signs up

extending what was a 13 week benefit to 99 weeks is just stupid
I know a guy who is unemployed and just got back up north from his SECOND Florida winter vacation. He's been unemployed for close to 99 months and has no intention of taking a job until the unemployment handouts run out.

He's got it planned pretty well. He was able to get his child support payments reduced to what the government gives him. His child will reach 18 soon, about the time his unemployment runs out - a little before but he owes back support. He will have the government (aka taxpayers) pay the child support and it should all come together for him, he'll be done with both child support and unemployment and then plans to start working again.

But yes, he's on an extended paid vacation.

You paid in $400 a week for a long enough time period to cover almost 2 years?

Of course not. Do you have a car? Do you know how insurance works?

So malamute - Why don't you do your civic duty and turn this thief over to the unemployment authorities. By not turning him in you are participating in his fraud.

Since you know this guy, his situation can easily be extrapolated to everyone.

See as I said before, unemployment rate is nothing but laziness index. We would have full employment now if there was no unemployment insurance.

He's not a thief at all. The government very happily turns over this money to him, pays his child support -- as long as he pretends to look for a job. Meanwhile he can travel to Florida for the winter and enjoy his time on the beach -- the government doesn't care.

He like many others sees a good deal. He can live well enough on unemployment and it pays the child support and he owes a little more after his child reaches 18 and the unemployment checks should keep rolling in to just about that time.

It's kind of a win-win for him. His child support gets paid for him, he doesn't have to resent working to pay his ex for that. She gets less however but she still gets the support.

Soon he'll be ready to return to work. He won't lose his house because he sold another investment he had to pay down his mortgage so he's doing just fine.

I have to add -- he actually cheats a little -- he does work on the side for cash -- but he doesn't have to pay taxes or child support on that but since the government allows millions of people to come into the country and do exactly that, he figures why not? So he has extra money to enjoy himself.

Keep up the good work Malamute. See the other thread. 484K more people decided to taste the sweet life of laziness and handouts. It pays to be lazy. It is disgusting to live in a country where almost 10% of the population demands handouts.

Get rid of the unemployment insurance and everyone would have jobs now.
