I do about 20 hours a week for free. Love it. Run errands, go to the grocery or drug store for sick or elderly. Help with other minor chores as well. Part of a neighborhood group that does just that.

The problem is like the soviets found those people don't work. It reminds me of the teen summer program we had at work. I the end they could do very little because they coudn't for instances work outside;too hot. In teh end we quite taking them because they sat around and we had theft problems.Bascailly when you pay its not communtiy sercie IMO. Where i live people voluteer for such things for 0 Pay. i do think they should aloow a tax dedcution for certified expenses tho. It cost now days to delever meals on wheels with gas prices.

This touches on the problem that the long-tern unemployed have. They loos their job skills and work habits. (I am part of they) Also the long term unemployed need more money. So what I was thinking was that you could have a program that took over when the normal unemployment insurance ran out that paid people to do community service. The participants would go to a temp agency get signed up and turn in community serves hrs. for pay. The rate of pay would be minimum wage to a maximum of 20 hrs. a week.

This I think would be better than what we have now.
What you've proposed here is reminiscent of the Works Project Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's and 40's. I happen to believe that both programs were very noble in their intent, and respectably successful in their contributions to America. Most people don't realize that much of the infrastructure we use today is a result of those programs. Instead of a stimulus, I would have been much more supportive of some sort of CCC program. Unfortunately, the political and cultural environment in which we live will never permit something like that to happen again.

The idea has merit, and it's certainly not new, but how is this related to socialism vs. capitalism?

The place that I am working is the last vestiges of the most successful attempt at socialism ever.

That is probably correct. But to just get some money for community service instead of getting a check for doing nothing That would be far better for everyone.

Whaddya mean?? Congress just extended unemployment benefits until the end of the year. Obama's voters can take a vacation until election time and then some.
