We aleardy are putting a pipel;ine to send sand tars to new unit at refineries on the gulf coast to be processed. We are far passed our peak oil and thew world is alos. That doesn't mean we will ru out in 2012. It wil still be the cheapest energy sources for years to come. We not only need to work on replacing it for gasoline but the other 19000 products we get from it.Even when we get alterntives they will be much more expensive espeailly in the years when the infrastrucure cost are very high;its like paying for a nuclear plant;it isn't cheap.
Here is my take on how to make PV 4 EV cheaper than Gasoline and it would only take about 10 years or so until it is past brake even. After that it will be cheaper to do it than to not do it.
That chart is useless without knowing the details on the quality of the oil. Canada produces a lot of cheaper dirty oil requiring much more refining. Saudi Arabia, of course, produces the high quality stuff that simplifies the refining process.

Ok, well light sweet crude (the best stuff) comes from Nigeria, Algeria, Angola, and the Congo (domestic supply comes primarily from Texas). Sour crude comes from Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Iran and Iraq both pump the sour crude as well. Both serve different purposes in general, but sour crude can be refined into gasoline, but takes significantly more effort than with the sweet stuff..

If this is true, and I think its a definite possibility, we have a few years, shouldn't we change some of our social policies now instead of waiting till the last minute. You know, improve public transportation. Up the efficiency requirements on cars (even better make living near work safe and affordable for anyone who can do it). That way, oil can be used for heating and other things.
We could also start making homes more efficient. Mass production of new windows, improve insulation...etc.
Or we can let the market fix things (always reactionary to a problem, never proactive) and wait until China, India and the like are consuming even more and we have to fight them for it.

Sigh...Peak Oil has been mental pondering fodder every year since 1956.
Each year doom sayers will crow "Don't worry, we know it will happen this year! Trust Us!".
I'm not holding my breath.
