I've been to a couple of Tea Party rallies. I'll go to more. I have a BS in Computer Information Systems and an MBA. Am I what I consider rich? No. But I am saving like crazy for retirement because I think that there will be no SS or very limited benefits when I retire in 24 years (if they don't raise the age) due to the government having to pay back what it has borrowed.
Poor woman just can't make up her mind. I have been on SS for over 15 years and don't feel bad about all that at all. I paid in for over 45 years before retiring and then I was paying as a small business owner for some time and am still paying into it at 77 because I just won't stop working. Yep, I get a bit more than I pay in but then that is just what old FDR set up for us.
This SS will be ok after the boomers are all dead. After that the life expectancy will drop because everybody in the country will be fat diabetics and have heart disease.
I am loath to include poll findings because I find them too fresh and possibly manipulated to be accurate....
But, some of the recent news on Tea Partiers finds them as more educated and wealthier than the average citizen.
Regarding the wealth, are any of these polls even close to being accurate?
Regarding the education bit: is this a reflection of the sad state of education in our nation?
The cause they take up is lacking substance and based purely on sour grapes and cynism. These are the same people who sat idly by while Bush wrecked this country on every level. Educated or not, they really represent the bottom of this society.
Well, judging by some of the polls on education and wealth on CD, it seems the vast majority of people here have graduate degrees, MBAs and PhDs and are making 6 figures or more....
It's easy to lie in a poll, especially if you think it will benefit the group you're representing. Also, people will generally tell others they are far more educated and wealthier than they really are. Makes them feel better about themselves, I guess.
No, it came from a right weaning source as well I think. The statistics strike me as strange, no matter what the source.
According to USA Today/Gallup poll (March 26-28, 2010), a tea partier is almost an average American adult. I used "almost" because there are minor variances. For example
- if we consider that any household making less than $50K pays no federal income tax, then 45% of tea partiers (the ones who are also screaming out loud about being overtaxed) pay no federal income tax compared to 47% of an average American.
- an average American has a slightly greater chance of having a college degree and post graduate degree (33%) than a tea party supporter (31%).
- an average tea partier is older. 50% of tea party supporters are 50 or older compared to an overall American populace which is 47%.
This poll debunks the myth that tea partiers are more educated and wealthier. Some of these numbers are further skewed by the fact that younger populace (those under 20) would not have college degree and earn less while they make up a greater percentage of non-tea party supporters.

Most excellent post! I'm willing to bet that 75% of message board talk about income is BS.
