"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

You should try reading the Constitution sometime.
Bingo...we have a winner.

Glad someone actually knows what's in the document; seems that most Americans blab about it but couldn't tell it apart from the Koran if it really came down to it...

The First Amendment was never a free pass to always say and do anything you want in any societal situation without consequence.

What has your community done about their counterpart using the confederate flag to mask hatred? They're cheered on, you overlook it with a wink, and allow dishonor to displace the memory of Lee.

Some traditions are despicable. There is no reason to keep a tradition for tradition's sake. The fraternity is a private organization, they can choose to do what they want.

You make it sound like slavery was no big deal.

General Lee was extremely well respected by both the Confederate and Union armies. While president of Washington College (later Washington & Lee), he taught young men from both armies. His one rule - "We have only one rule here - to act like a gentleman at all times."

He was also punished by the north for choosing to fight for Virginia. His land in Arlington, VA was used as a cemetery so that he would never be able to come back and farm it. That cemetery is now known as Arlington National Cemetery. The Lee house still sits on it.

Actually that's the Curtis family home and while it was initially confiscated by the Union, the courts returned it to Lee's wife who sold it to the federal government for Arlington Cemetery.

Sometimes, I think college campuses are the best examples of repression...even more than California.

We have a big WW2 weekend re enactment with a lot of guys dressing as german soldiers. Some as SS. Its just re enactments and it would be kind of lame if they did mock combat without an enemy. The same goes for civil war re enactments such as the big ones they have every year in Gettysburg. Many spend a lot of money and equipment and put on very historical spectacles. I can't imagine anybody getting offended by that.
I've seen white guys dress as native americans for colonial/ revolutionary war re enactments. Women dress as men and also participate. Its just like playing a part in a movie or play. You have the right to be offended now shut up about it.
That WW2Weekend was pretty cool, BTW. I saw a Tuskegee airman and a german pilot in the same room. The war is over. The Civil war is LONG over.

Is it just me or does it strike anyone else as odd that a war reenactor is preaching that the war is over?
