What?

1. You are making a category mistake by lumping an oil accident with an intentional aggression against a sovereign nation.

2. War is a choice we make for good or bad. That is not the same as risk. There is a surety in war that does not exist in drilling for oil. Bad may or may not happen in oil drilling. That creates risk. In war, bad will happen. No if, ands or buts.

But we don't stop drilling! That's my point!

Exxon Valdez Anniversary: 20 Years Later, Oil Remains

Oil naturally "disappears" through two processes: As the tide rises over an oil patch, the water sloughs off bits of oil, which then disperse into the ocean as tiny, less harmful droplets that can biodegrade easily.
Biodegradation occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms break down oil as part of their life cycle. But Prince William Sound is what ecologists call a closed system—it's not exposed to big, pounding waves, so the oil has time to seep into the sand,

The Gulf is open ocean! It is not closed up! This will pass!

Reading is your friend!

Read up on the disaster caused should the oil reach the Gulf Stream.

But we make changes. You mentioned the Valdez oil spill as an example. Look at the changes that have been made to oil tankers in the time since that spill.

(And, like Ovcatto, I should say that it's wrong to say that that spill is in the rear view mirror. Its effects are still being felt.)

Ah, no one has stopped drilling. According to the DOE, there are 4,000 working rigs in the gulf, none have been shut down. The only halt has been the initiation of any new drilling.

BP assured America that they were using the latest scientific advances to ensure safety of offshore drilling. If that is the best there is for safety, we are in trouble!

I'm okay with safe guards and improvements being made. I WANT THAT. I just don't want us to stop just because of this.

Which is stupid.

Perhaps ensuring safety of offshore drilling is a bigger task than humans are capable of!

We really should leave something left of this planet to our children and grandchildren, don't you think?
