The study says that it would be a paid, 6 month leave because they are females.
What ? When I had my son I got 6 weeks paid leave..and it takes about 4 weeks to PHYSICALLY recover with a normal birth..longer for cesarean which involves stitches.
Good point. My mom takes off a ton of time at work to care for my 92 year old grandmother. She has more doctor appointments then we ever had activity wise as kids.
Good point. I'm helping my mother recover from major foot surgery, and she can't put weight on the foot for a few more months. It's a lot of work, not unlike a newborn.
You get sliced from here to tomorrow and then stitched back up after shoving out a watermelon sized kid and let me know how you are doing after 3 days!
Or try a C-section. You get EIGHT weeks paid for that instead of six, woo-hoo. Of course, activities such as taking a deep breath, laughing, yawning, walking...all bring on pain.

I don't have any children and never been pregnant but if I was I still don't think that a paid 6 month leave would be a fair policy. I'd certainly take it if it was available but, i don't get that type of policy. If could certainly make employers more reluctant to hire females. I do believe that a woman should be able to use her vacation or sick time or to get an unpaid leave of absence for up to a year before and after having a baby.
If a woman has a baby then there should be a man around someplace so it should not be a major hardship if she has to go without pay for awhile. Now rather or not the employer can keep her job open for her is another thing too.
