(Newser) – Topless protesters filled the streets of Farmington, Maine, today, agitating for an end to the double standard that says shirtless men are A-OK but shirtless women are scandalous. Fully clothed counterprotesters—one wielding a blanket—urged the demonstrators to cover up, but they're within the law, notes the Portland Press Herald. "It’s almost like a circus,” said an attendee waving a sign that read “Pornography doesn’t belong on the streets."
I do think it's a double standard and its not right that woman usually have to wear tops. For some reason the exposed human body, especially the female human body, is considered inappropriate.
A lot of progress has been made over the last 100 years on equality between the genders...heck, I remember my grandmother telling me that back when she was young woman weren't even allowed to wear pants. I hope that progress continues to be made.
However, it's tough to change deeply entrenched beliefs and I don't see topless woman becoming the norm anytime soon. I do admire these brave woman who are willing to go against the culture. Standing up to the vast majority opinion is very difficult.
It certainly does take a pair! (pun definitely intended)
The reason women wear burkas is to discourage men from being distracted. Of course I disagree with this and no way american women ought to be obliged to wear potato sacks, but at the same time I don't expect that being topless is going to coax men into self discipline any time soon.
As soon as a legitimate poll shows overwelmingly that men do not consider a womans breasts as a sexually enticing feature, I will agree that women should be able to go topless.
Conversely, if the majority of women convince the public that male breasts are a sexual turn-on, then men should be required to also cover 'em up

Because they are hidden away is the biggest reason they are a sexual enticement, if you grew up seeing breasts all the time they lose that appeal. If you consider some of these primitive tribes where they pretty much walk around nude is the nudity itself sexual?
They are just a bunch of freaks looking for an opportunity to expose themselves.
