MOMBASA, Kenya - In a daring high-seas rescue, U.S. Navy SEAL snipers killed three Somali pirates and freed the American sea captain who had offered himself as a hostage to save his crew.

The operation was a victory for the world's most powerful military but angry pirates vowed Monday to retaliate.

Those threats raised fears for the safety of some 230 foreign sailors still held hostage in more than a dozen ships anchored off the coast of lawless Somalia.

The there was the attack on an Italian cruise ship ..... the ship had Israeli security guards on board. Not a smart move

Cruise ship I was on last year had ex-Ghurkas handling the security. I felt pretty good about that.

These pirates are the ideological decendants of the same Muslim pirates that preyed on our country's merchant ships at the close of the 18th century. The United States was so weak then that we actually paid them off. Finally the price got too high and we decided to fight back. Congress approved money for a navy and the US Marines were formed to attack the pirates at Tripoli.

Fast forward 200 years. Our nation is a great and powerful one with vastly improved technology. They are still running around thinking they are hot $h1t by preying on unarmed merchant ships. When they encounter someone that can fight back then they try to run away, Millions for defense, not one red cent for tribute.

We ought to go up and down the Somali coast and put 5" HE shells into anything that even remotely looks like a boat. Problem solved.

Until we do something like that they will continue to prey on shipping. Appeasement never works but guns they respect.

Back in the day the East India Trading ships could take care of themselves.

I expect the answer to the expansion of piracy is to rearm the merchant ships of the world. A mounted 50 gal machine gun is a very formidable weapon and there are a huge variety of anti-tank rockets that could be effective against small to medium size boats. A radio call to the nearest real Navy would take care of full size pirate ships.

I hope they do!! Maybe we can end this ridiculous crap once and for all!! Might give us an excuse to blow them all up!!

Those Seals are bad cats!! That Capt went from being a hostage to being Captain again, in less than 3 seconds!
