My brother lives in NY and use to tell me that Giuliani got crime down to where people could actually feel safe in Central Park.
Is this true?
What did he do to get the crime down if he did?
Just wondering if this would help in Chicago, summer is here and it is going to be bad.

He did in my opinion. He used a system called copstat that tracked crimes where they were commited and by who. He also started a crack down on petty crimes with the theory that if you were stopped for something minor it may turn into something major and many times it did. He also cleaned up TS by kicking all the porn and druggies out. CP is awesome I feel totally safe there.

Thanks for the information,
What about gangs?
Did he have a specific remedy to help with that?
They have actually considered asking for the national guard here, it is very bad.

While he may have done some good however crime dropped all over the country while he was mayor. The reasons for this were nearly 100% employment. Crime always drops in a good economy. Remember the 90's when it seemed there was 2 jobs for every worker. The other thing the he had going for him was Clinton made money available for for extra police. Raise your police force by 10% and crime will go down.

Please don't make Rudy Giuliani out to be some kind of hero. As far as the majority of New Yorkers were concerned, he was one of the worst, most uncaring Mayors we ever had. His basic platform could be described as Self Aggrandizement. Then terrorists attacked the World Trade Center (while he was still in office) and he turned himself into "America's Mayor." The rest of the country seems to idolize him. They shouldn't.

It's all a lie.

The only place he tightened up on crime was in the neighborhoods where all the money is.

It did not change anywhere else. And the Central Park thing? Sure, it's ok if you're on the south, east and west but if you lived on 110th st, you would not walk around late at night.

That's all changing because the area is now being gentrified, meaning that whites are moving in, so the police protect white interests.

What you have stated is grossly repugnant and factually untrue. That man cared deeply about the families and attended every funeral connected to the WTC. He fought for medical care, and $$ for the families left behind. HE did nothing to become the 'People's Mayor', that was annointed on him by the media. He was a uniting force during the darkest days of NYC and our country.

Ask anyone who grew in New York in the 70s and 80s and then ask them about New York today. One could say that 9/11 helped implement more security measures, but Giuliani did a lot of work in making areas safer to go out.

Crime did increase under Giuliani and he deserves some of the credit, but doesn't deserve all of the credit, which some people like to give him. First off crime peaked in NYC in 1990, from 1991-1993 crime in NYC dropped, Giuliani was not in office, David Dinkins Giuliani took over in 1994. During this time crime was actually still increasing nationwide although it was decreasing in NYC. Also keep in mind throughout the mid and late 90's during the economic boom we had, crime dropped all over. The rates dropped dramatically in cities nationwide. Compstat is probably responsible for some of the drop in NYC, but so is simply having more officers on the streets which stated in 1990 and 1991 under Dinkins. While I wouldn't argue with someone saying Giuliani played a role in reducing crime it happened for many reasons, and started several years before he was in office.

I do not know anything about Giuliani, but once the crack epidemic subsided around 1991 or 1992, crime rates began to fall across the country, even during the brief period of elevated unemployment rates following the early 90s recession. NYC was particularity hard hit by the epidemic, and spent the latter half of the 90s recovering from it, as did several other large cities across the nation..
