In the case of saltwater they supposedly use the money to maintain facilities such as boat ramps and etc. Most public boat ramps already have an access fee that averages 5.00.

I say it's to collect more money. Massachusetts also just added a salt water license law and fee which will take effect next year.

We already have to pay for that. You have to pay to walk on the pier if you fish or not

Many states would like you to believe the funds you pay towards the license help maintain the conservation infrastructure, but instead put the money into the general account.
Those dept's typically get budget cuts first, as the funds from sportsman were allocated elsewhere.

If it were private industry, this would be considered false advertising.

Why teach a person to at least fish to feed themselves cheaply, taking less support, when they have to pay out the nose for it?

That makes as much sense as excusing a thief because they wanted steal and then sell hot goods so they have money to eat. Sorry, doesn't fly. All taxes should be uniform. These same folks exempted are the ones who will sell the fish out of their cooler along the roadside.

Wow. I am moving to Florida and quitting my job so I can subsist off of fishing with my free fishing license!

This is an outrage!

Welcome to 2010, most of us have had to pay for fishing licenses our whole adult lives.

There's a big difference between using a freshwater fishing license to stock the streams and rivers with trout, and imposing a saltwater fishing license requirement. The state isn't going to be able to significantly affect the number of fish in the sea.

NH is going to a Salt Water License too. As usual, they're desperate for any source of money for the "programs" that our State doesn't actually provide, but some other states apparently do. My Dad was poor as a church-mouse and there was never a single "program" from NH to help him, other than a small reduction in the property taxes (not passed until a year before he died) that were forcing him out of his house.

Squeeze more cash out of residents? In case you haven't noticed we don't pay state income tax.
