Because you can't kick back and self medicate try to find something that makes you laugh your ass off as much as time allows. Stooges vids on youtube usually work for me. I have found that there is truth in the old saying "laughter is the best medicine".
Good luck with everything. Elder care can be rewarding, but also very draining. And your wife's chronic pain is also exhausting for everyone. If you can and she feels like it, try to sneak off with her for a couple of hours to a movie or something. The world will still be there when you get back.
And the explosion in the Gulf? That falls into the category of things you just can't do anything about. I'm the other side of the Gulf and I feel like crying every time I think about it.
