Ralston reported that on April 5 he saw two African-American males arguing on a train track in West Philadelphia. He told investigators that when he stopped the two men for questioning one of them pulled out a gun and shot him in the left shoulder.

Philadelphia cop intentionally shot himself, commissioner says - CNN.com

The Problem is he shot himself to look important. How sick and twisted is that? The worst part of this story is, this guy is a 21 year veteran, working in a city that has some of the worst issues between police and citizens not to mention blacks. How stupid to shoot yourself with your OWN police issued weapon and blame it on someone else to get attention?

Promotions are hard to come by in the Philly PD so he figured being a wounded hero would help. Too bad he was stupid enough to use a tracable gun.

why do we question the reasons and motives for someone illegally armed with a record and w/o provocation shooting a police officer? what ever happened to firing squads? mideastern justice would be well employed here. bill cosby is right. we dont do punishment anymore. we do counseling ande time out. some kind of perverted mutant christiant sense of justice --assisting and supporting evil.

Isn't there also additional compensation to those wounded in the line?

No kidding...but something like that is done by a sick and twisted person. Maybe psych tests every five years or so would help?

this seems to fall along the lines of "the busy-haired stranger did it". At least it was honest police officers who investigated this goof ball. I can understand why he was not criminally charged though; there's the always good 'twinkie defense' and he undoubtedly would have claimed some sort of mental incompetency.

Why would he get a promotion? So shooting yourself while wearing a uniform, then accusing two unidentified black men of the crime still warrants a promotion and compensation?

Did you read the article?

Not a promotion but compensation for injury in the line of duty?

Well he was not thinking he would get caught, at least consciously.

He wanted it to look like he was in a struggle and was shot while doing his job.
