I see your point. I think the guys in Idaho are more white separatists than textbook militias. I'm just preparing to keep my family, neighborhood and city (in that order) safe in case of natural disaster. This area is the 2nd most active tornado "alley" but the most deadly. There is also a fault line north of Memphis that hasn't released any pressure since the early 1800's. Our police force of approximately 100 officers would be overwhelmed in a city or area disaster.
Bad guys don't practice. As I stated earlier, they only hit their target about 8% of the time. They also use some of the cheapest semi-auto handguns on the market. That along with the "cool", sideways method of shooting and they are setting themselves up for getting a spent shell jammed in the chamber.
In my training class, we spent half of our target time shooting targets at 5 feet. Our instructor quoted a LOT of FBI stats and most gun fights happen in 3's. They last 3 seconds and happen at 3 feet. We even practiced shooting with out pistols close to our body.
Back to your original post. I was going to try and persuade you to change your mind but decided against it. You have weighed all of the pro's and con's and decided against getting a permit. I wish the external factors in your decision did not exist and we were a color blind society. If you change your mind, send me a PM and I'll give you some links to find training in your area.

I've always had a 'lust' for these lever type rifles...from watching all those cowboy/indian movies as a kid...or that one show..'The rifle man'...boy he was good with that rifle...seems like rifles ruled the wild west as much as handguns...
This is almost the same as my .30-30 except mine is an early 1970's model. I've been hunting with it since 1980. A good lever action rifle is a great addition to any collection.

I had / have a .30-.30 Winchester and my only complaint is, when a spent cartridge ejects, it hits me right above the eye (I'm trying to keep on the target). I also have a .30-.30 Marlin - no problem.
I really prefer the side ejection.
