"After 40 years, the United States' war on drugs has cost $1 trillion and hundreds of thousands of lives, and for what? Drug use is rampant and violence even more brutal and widespread."
"This week President Obama promised to "reduce drug use and the great damage it causes" with a new national policy that he said treats drug use more as a public health issue and focuses on prevention and treatment."
Another failed republican initiated "war" President Obama has to clean up..
LOLS. It reminds me of the "war on poverty" dems started 40 plus years ago.
That's working out great. We still have millions of poor people.
This is a ridiculous and costly war, and I agree it's done no good whatsoever. If people want to ruin their lives by getting wasted all the time, that's their choice. It also irks me that there are so many chemical prescription meds that are just as bad, if not worse than the "recreational" ones...it's okay for people to kill themselves as long as chemical/pharma. companies are making enough $ on them, but it's not okay for some guy to quietly sit in his own home and smoke a joint after a long day at work? I choose to not partake in anything that changes my consiousness (even alcohol), but I certainly don't think it's right for anyone to DICTATE that we can't change our consciousness with these things if we choose to...especially things that grow straight out of the Earth!

Yeah, by throwing even more money towards.... enforcement??
"Nevertheless, his administration has increased spending on interdiction and law enforcement to record levels both in dollars and in percentage terms; this year, they account for $10 billion of his $15.5 billion drug-control budget."
Who can say whether the "war on drugs" has met any of its goals or not? There may have been some "hidden goals" that were met. The "war on drugs" gave us some laws that restricted financial freedom in ways not seen before, e.g. the ability of law enforcement to confiscate cash, real estate and other property with impunity, laws against "structured" financial transactions, required reporting to IRS by banks of any suspicious financial activity, "arresting" property, if drug money was suspected to have been used for purchase, etc. There are countless laws still in effect regarding financial transactions that came about as a result of the "war on drugs". This thread discusses the Nigerians who had $151,000 confiscated-- courtesy of laws passed to combat the "war on drugs". I am just cynical enough to think that there may have been a hidden agenda to the "war on drugs" that further eroded the Bill of Rights, specifically the Fourth Amendment. You know....."never let a good crisis go to waste".

The so called "War on Drugs" was never meant to be won. After all this time, confiscation of property, and the militarization of our nation's police force it's goal should be clear.
The "War on drugs" has never been anything more than a vehicle for the establishment of a police state. Take a good look around: the "Boys in Blue" now where black and dress like commandos. To "Protect and Serve" is an old-fashioned almost laughable idea.
It's ironic that the fabled "American Dream" can only be experienced while sleeping.
