And they will soon find out that the Russians do not share the same concern for legal niceties, the sanctity of life and human rights that they have come to expect from the West.

Finally a nation with some guts. I bet that the Russian navy is just quaking in thier boots over the Somali pirate's threats.

Yes and I'm sure (not) they'll be going right back up against the Russians.

The thing about Russia is they really don't care what anyone thinks about them.
The Somali pirates boasting about what they will do is sort of like a school geek boasting how he will kick the entire football teams butts.
They should ask the afghanistani's how the Soviet Union treated their prisoners.
Russia has a very long history of using extreme force to make a point. They don't need to worry about the we are the good guys line of BS. Everyone knows that the Russians just don't care. Not at all unlike the Israeli's.
More power to Russia in this regard.

I was in Italy during the Carter Admin. when the Iranian crisiss happened, after the US embassy was taken and US hostages were being held. One of the splinter Iranian groups grabed a Russian diplomat and held him hostage. The Russians found out who the head of the splinter group was and where his family lived. Two car loads of Russian KGB drove up to the leaders brothers house where the leaders wife and family were living. They took the brother out into the courtyard with the family watching, put a gun to the back of his head and killed him, at this point they informed the family that the leader had 24 hours to release the diplomat or the whole family would be wiped out. The diplomat was released within a day. Funny this never showed up in the US press.

The Somalis are making the mistake of believeing Russians are westerners. The Somalis fail to realize that the Russians presently in power are former Soviets and the guy up front is ex-KGB who has no issue with collateral damage.

I remember when that happened. I also recall that the Russians started moving divisions of troops to their border with Iran and made it clear that they would use them if they had to.

They weren't trying to get Ronald Reagan elected, either.
