While the farmers feel justified in their behavior, many Florida residents are outraged over destruction of the fruit. From online to soup lines, people are expressing their displeasure. "There is no way else you can put it into words other than they are selfish people," Freddy Conyers said from a Miami soup kitchen.

Blame it on the litigious society we live in. The liability of someone getting hurt during "pick your own" operations trumped the ability to harvest the fruit for a profit. I blame lawyers and general American entitlement-minded greed.

Yep. When I worked at a big box home improvement store, we donated a bunch of stuff to Habitat for Humanity. One of the windows slammed shut and broke the finger of a worker who promptly sued our store. Now, all of their 'damaged' merchandise (which means that it may only have a nick or score which can be covered quite easily) is destroyed and not donated.
Plenty of stories like that JetJockey, I know it used to be a common practice in this area for many of the catering business'sto give the left over food away to the soup kitchens. They always have a lot of leftovers. Not anymore, now it goes in the garbage.

People are far too sue happy in this country.
Yes, too many lawyers in this country. Tort reform would fix many problems, including medical insurance costs. To me, watching a law school graduation is like watching a snake give birth. It makes my skin crawl.

from your link: "cheaper to pay farm laborers to destroy the crops rather than ship the fruit to market".
Freddy Conyers doesn't know his ars from a hole in the ground.
It s NOT selfsh to take a larger loss than you have too. It's good busness practice.
