This has turned into a disaster of epic proportions. At this point it's anyone's guess how bad it's going to get. For they just can't stop it.
Thanks Big Oil.
Quote:
A month to the day after an April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig sent oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, the first oil washed ashore Thursday in populated areas from Port Fourchon to the western edge of Grand Isle.
"It's not sheen. It's not tar balls. It's thick, nasty oil," Jefferson Parish Councilman Tom Capella said. "It's like when you were a kid and stuck your finger in the brownie mix."
--------
Perhaps the hardest-hit area Thursday was Elmer's Island, a wildlife refuge west of Grand Isle that has long been a popular spot for bird-watching and beach camping.
Hundreds of oil-coated hermit crabs lay dead or dying along the blackened shoreline, having lost their battle to crawl out of the toxic mess.
This sad story is just beginning. What a tragedy of greed and deregulation of the oil industry. The rest of the world is probably laughing, as well as crying, it was allowed to happen.
The whole idea of expanding off-shore drilling and the "drill baby, drill" chants seem so stupid now. Coincidentally neither political side can use this to their advantage. The "R" always pushed for more drilling, and Obama said he wanted to expand it too. I guess both sides need to agree that it was a very bad idea.

The mere fact that BP has been lying and restricting media coverage (cops are even blocking access to beaches), tells you that this thing is a heck of a lot worse than they're telling us...
Here's a site that you can play with which forecasts where the oil is going to spread over the coming days:
A month in, outrage over Gulf oil spill grows - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100521/ap_on_bi_ge/us_gulf_oil_spill - broken link)
Another article on it. Further in the article you'll see that anyone and everyone in the government points their finger somewhere else. "Not their agency". All fingers point to BP yet we have all these oversight and regulatory agencies who supposedly had disaster plans.
EPA has a plan..put together in 1994 but they never bothered to stock the fire booms the plan called for.
Truly disgusting how our government shirks any responsibility for anything anymore.
Why have them if they will not do anything proactive, will not regulate, will not inspect and will not step up to the plate when a disaster occurrs. Why ?

The explosion took place because a rubber gasket in the underwater device was torn into pieces a few days before the accident. BP, and the rig operating company insisted in continuing drilling anyway, because the repair would have cost them millions. I don't know how anyone, except them, could have prevented the accident. There should be a criminal negligence charge against BP, and the rig company. Let's not forget that 11 people died in the explosion.

Yeah, I saw that on 60 Minutes. BP is unquestionably criminally negligent
Notice how you virtually never hear about the 11 people who died?
Notice as well the way Big Oil defenders are now avoiding these threads like they would a plague.

MMS inspections possibly. That rig was shut down once before for that exact part not functioning properly.
This article will get your feathers ruffled. Read about the changing number of inspections kept coming out of the MMS.
And Salazar's take on this...not his fault but if they give him $29 billion he can make sure something like this never happens again.
And then this:
"..the minerals agency since January 2009 has approved at least three huge lease sales, 103 seismic blasting projects and 346 drilling plans. Agency records also show that permission for those projects and plans was granted without getting the permits required under federal law. "
