It seems to me that we spend lots of time arguing over things that are micro in the BIG picture. The BIG picture is this- the American Empire is history. We had our century in the sun just as the United Kingdom and the Roman Empire before us. Now it is over. The sun is setting on the west and rising on the east now. Next century belongs to the east. The FACT is we can gripe and vote until the end of time. Except for the rich, the rest of us are doomed to a lessor standard of life and will have to eventually accept this as fact. The USA will have to lower living standards to even have a possibility of competing in the global economic order.

Started in the 70's and ramped up in the 90's.
We are now starting to see the results of those actions put in place.

Follow the money. New money and new investments are not happening in the US.
It happens to all empires...they usually collapse from their own doing.

I don't see the Middle East/Islam being a major player -it will remain a backwater - important only for its oil. America's "decline" is more about Asian/Pacific countries industrializing, competing for resources, and "catching up". We can't go back to the glory days where America & Europe were industrialized & the rest of the world were just our puppets, end-consumers, and sources of raw materials. You can't stop the spread of technology. China/Japan/ROK & other Pacific nations are industrializing and adopting "American" ideals while the Middle East still worries about pleasing God and playing the victim card. It's the godless countries that are adopting capitalism & western ideals that will beat us at our own game.

What do you define as "The American Empire" and what parts of it are we losing?

Why do people always assume the economy is zero sum?

America's economy will recover in a few years and resume growth.

If Asia grows, that doesn't mean the USA is dragged down.

I REPEAT THE ECONOMY IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME.

I was kidding, I thought that was obvious, too

Maybe not a zero-sum game, but there are only so many people and resources. And we can't even seriously be wishing for all 7b earthlings to live like US-Americans.

China and India's rapid economic growth doesn't necessarily spell doom for the standard of living in America. The most significant aspect of Asia's growth is that the west will have lesser global political and economic influence. Also, keep in mind that many economists predict that neither China's nor India's economy will necessarily surpass that of the US, but likely level with it. Also keep in mind that China and India's rapid economic growth might not be sustained over the next few decades. Anything could happen.

It would be the shortest reign for a super power if you apply the term to other dominant "empires". In the grand scheme of things, if you're not around at least 500 years minimum, you were just a flash in the pan.
