The Associated Press has called the Republican gubernatorial primary for Susana Martinez, the Doña Ana County District Attorney. Martinez won a five-way race to face Democratic candidate Diane Denish, who faced only a write-in opponent in the Democratic primary, in the November election. As of this writing, Martinez has nearly 50 percent of the votes in the Republican primary, Allen Weh (NM GOP chairman 2004-2009) has 31. 3 percent..
(Bill Richardson is not running for re-election.)
Oh, yeah, she's a winner. Endorsed by Sarah Palin and the Swift Boat guy (to the tune of $450,000, a huge sum here in NM). You think our state government is corrupt now - just wait and see who she sells out to if she gets elected.

Another thing that New Mexicans have to think about - with Arizona clamping down, Phoenix may lose it's title as the Number Two Kidnapping Capital of the World and that claim could very easily go to a New Mexico town. Very easily. If Arizona closes up some of the cartel routes into that state, they can easily shift to New Mexico - although California seems to want it more.
People away from the border don't realize what kinds of things go on - recently a family living in New Mexico went home for a wedding and were kidnapped right in the church as they were leaving the wedding. They were severely tortured and murdered, their bodies left in the back of a truck until someone noticed the smell. With the border wide open, the kidnapping could have very easily taken place in New Mexico, there is nothing stopping the cartels from coming over. For now it's easier to carry out most of these crimes on the Mexican side but people can't assume that's always going to be the case. And El Paso itself might be safe enough - but very violent Mexican gangs are moving into surrounding cities, including those in New Mexico.
