good topic that you don't hear discussed very much.

“If the purpose of putting hybrid vehicles on the road is to lower our dependence on foreign oil, and all we’re doing is buying cars that need Chinese rare earth materials, aren’t we trading one dependence for another?” asked Mark Smith, chief executive of Molycorp Minerals, a US mining firm.

China only has about 24% of the worlds rare earth resources. The country in second place in the United States.

It is far cheaper to open and run a mine in China than in the US. We should be mining our own metals behind a tariff walls to destroy the Chinese price advantage created by substandard wages and environmental protection costs. These tariffs should apply to all imported goods.

You are right, lets keep consuming oil which is reaching its peak rather than invest into alternative forms of energy.

How many drugs are you on?

This is one of the most dumbest post I have seen in awhile.

Not an expert here but I believe that Canada also has large deposits of these minerals.

Wonder if Africa is loaded with this stuff. According to the video the enviro's shut down mining for this stuff in the US. Wonder how long till they figure out why their putt putt car batteries cost so much.

(NaturalNews) It's the bubble you've probably never heard of: The rare earth bubble. And it's due to pop in 2012, potentially devastating the industries of western nations that depend on these rare elements.

What industries are those? The automobile industry uses tens of thousands of tons of rare earth elements each year, and advanced military technology depends on these elements, too. Lots of "green" technologies depend on them, including wind turbines, low-energy light bulbs and hybrid car batteries. In fact, much of western civilization depends on rare earth elements such as terbium, lanthanum and neodymium.

So what's the problem with these rare elements? 97 percent of the world's supply comes from mines in China, and China is prepared to simply stop exporting these strategic elements to the rest of the world by 2012.

Global supply of rare earth elements could be wiped out by 2012

Carter had a energy plan, but you guys scream bloody socialism and killed it. Instead, you guys think it was better to rely upon 3rd world countries for energy who have a history of human right violations.

Nowadays, your reliance is even more absurd. You are looking towards the Chinese for your fuel demands, yet blame "greenies" for it.

Thanks for the laugh and one of the most ****ed up posts I have seen in awhile.
