Whose cable did you have? I had Adelphia or Comcast or whoever it was then and had no cable at all. At that time I did have AT&T phone and Internet service and was able to run my computer via a generator and stay online the whole time. We were out of power for two full weeks with Frances and 1 week with Jean. Further, the cable frequently went out during thunderstorms.

I currently watch very little TV so can't say much about the cable service these days, but I can tell you that Comcast went out during both showings of AMC's 2-hour finale of The Killing, the only other show I bother to watch besides Mad Men, and I was frustrated and furious.

We had DirecTV in Ohio (we lived too far out in the country for cable) and losing the signal during heavy rain or snow was irritating. After posting the initial inquiry here, we decided against satellite TV for Florida because of this - even though the DirecTV rep claimed that they had much better technology now to deal with signal loss. Ha. From what I have read here, obviously this is not the case. We are very happy with AT&T's Uverse.

I'm not asking for recommendations of specific companies, just a general idea of which is more reliable.
I had satellite in a Jacksonville rental and it was AWFUL. ALWAYS losing reception, freezing, jumping or just out of service even with clouds BEFORE rain. The landlord had them out several times just to see if it was an installation error. If it wasn't included in my rent I never would have kept it.

I had the same experience pet sitting in other people's homes who had satellite. For both DirectTV and Dish.

Comcast is included in my HOA so yay for that

Satelite all the way..I've had it for 15 years from NC to FL and never had a problem. Does anyone really still go cable?

And by the way... Dish is NOT owned by DirecTV.

Now that this thread was bumped I'll say that my Vero clients' satellite is not anywhere near as bad as in Jax.

I barely see any interruptions during a storm. Maybe some buffering and that's it.

I have been on OTA for six months and get between 28 and 38 stations, some Latin and some faith based but do get the major networks and my monthly cost is ZERO. I stream a lot and that gives me most of what I like. Not perfect but love the monthly cost. If anyone has OTA let me know as I am always looking to learn. Seems on cloudy days we receive more channels.

We are getting rid of cable as of April 1st. I am currently paying 225.00 a month. I really do not think it will be a problem. Can't wait for the savings to add up. Of course we will be keeping high speed internet.
