Floresta Drive Closure Set to Re-Open on August 10, 2017

PORT ST. LUCIE - The Floresta Drive Closure from Atlantus Avenue to Chaloupe Avenue will re-open on August 10, 2017 around 10 a.m. The roadway in this area had been closed since June 5 to complete necessary roadway, drainage and underground infrastructure activities for the Crosstown Parkway Extension Project.

"We felt closing the roadway in the summer and completing this work at one time was the best for all involved to minimize long term impacts and provide a safer roadway for motorists," said City Manager Russ Blackburn. "We thank the residents, businesses, churches and schools in the area for their patience during the closure."

Floresta Drive has returned to a through configuration and the detours for this closure are no longer in effect. Motorists are reminded to use caution when driving near the construction zone and surrounding streets. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph within the construction zone. Motorists please use caution as construction traffic will be crossing Floresta Drive at Crosstown periodically for project deliveries. West Virginia Drive remains closed for the duration of the project.

Make history! Help the City of Port St. Lucie name its new riverfront park\\

PORT ST. LUCIE – The plans for the City’s new riverfront park feature all the elements of a showcase
project: Waterfront dining, a children’s play area, historical structures, boardwalk, access for boaters,
amphitheater, connection to conservation land and canoe launch.

But the plans and proposals are missing one important item -- an official name.

The City is asking residents to help us name this park, which is expected to become a premier Treasure
Coast waterfront destination on the west side of Westmoreland Boulevard, just south of the Port St. Lucie
Botanical Gardens.

Proposed names can be submitted until, Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017 at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Riverfront-Park.

Name suggestions also can be emailed to
media@cityofpsl.com.

Tell us the perfect name, and you could make Port St. Lucie history!
“PSL, we are building a waterfront park that is likely to be a special destination and community
landmark,” said Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec. “Help us start this off right by helping us find just the
right name. Please submit your suggestion today and ask your friends and neighbors to do the same.”
The survey contains a brief history of the park site to help residents brainstorm name ideas. Those who
submit a name are asked to give a brief explanation of their name, but the explanation is not required. Indepth
information on the plans for the park, along with project timelines, proposed park budgets and
milestones, is found at http://www.cityofpsl.com/cra.

FORT PIERCE — The Sunrise City has joined the league of the elite.

Nearly two years after the old Nova Cinemas closed, the space has been transformed into a luxury dine-in movie theater with recliners.

The new Touchstar Cinemas Sabal Palms Luxury 6 opened Friday in the Sabal Palm Plaza. The theater is at 2539 S. U.S. 1, south of Virginia Avenue.

It’s the fourth Touchstar Cinemas theater that Karishma and Bimal Dattani, of Orlando, have opened. They opened their first theater 15 years ago in Orlando and have another Florida theater in Spring Hill and one in Huntsville, Alabama.

“Once you watch a movie in here, you won’t go somewhere else,” Bimal Dattani said.

Communications DepartmentCommunications Department, City of Port St. LucieAGENCY

The City of Port St. Lucie ranks among the top 10 safest cities in the U.S.
Two separate national reports have placed the City of Port St. Lucie among the top 10 safest cities in the nation. These rankings come just weeks after law enforcement statistics showed Port St. Lucie continues to be the safest large City in Florida.

Port St. Lucie was the eighth safest City in the United States in a recent report by Niche, a company that researches, analyzes and collects reviews on cities throughout the nation. Niche researchers analyzed public crime data from various sources, including the U.S. Census and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It also considered more than 100 million reviews from users, who rated how safe they feel in their cities. Port St. Lucie was one of two Florida cities in Niche’s top 10 list, where Naperville, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, earned the top spot. Cape Coral, Florida was ranked at No. 10.

In a separate report by SafeHomeBlog, Port St. Lucie was ranked as the ninth safest city in the nation. Port St. Lucie was the only Florida City to earn a spot in that top ten list, with Virginia Beach, Virginia taking the top spot. The SafeHomeBlog’s analysists reviewed the latest crime data provided by law enforcement agencies, along with population data. They used a statistical method to measure crime rates for U.S. cities with a population of greater than 100,000.

Earlier this summer, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s 2016 Uniform Crime Report showed
the City of Port St. Lucie experienced the lowest number of crimes last year among all of Florida’s cities
with a population of more than 100,000. This marked the seventh year in a row that the City had the lowest crime rate of all Florida’s large cities.

The City Council approved an apartment complex to be built in Tradition behind Wawa and the shopping center there. It will have over 300 apartments- a mix of studio, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom plans. They will have 2 dog parks and a pool. Interesting to note- residents with dogs will have their pet Poo-printed. If owners leave their animal's droppings in the park, they will go thru a series of violations and ultimately can be evicted.

St. Lucie County Offers Free Public Transportation Pilot Program

Effective Friday, Sept. 1, the Treasure Coast Connector will begin offering free public transportation trips within St. Lucie County as part of a two-year pilot, thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.

A new study by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) recently revealed that 87 percent of public transit trips directly impact the economy by connecting people to employers needing workers, educational opportunities and to retail and entertainment ventures. In St. Lucie County, the public transportation system provided nearly 500,000 annual trips, impacts land use and development patterns, generates jobs, enables economic growth and supports public policies regarding energy use, air quality and carbon emissions.

Because of the success of St. Lucie County’s award-winning Students Ride Free program, officials successfully obtained a grant to help cover the transportation costs for the next two years, allowing anyone to ride the Treasure Coast Connector fixed route buses for free for the next two years.

To learn more about public transportation services in St. Lucie County, visit us at SLCRide.org. Riders can also download the smart phone app Route Shout to obtain bus stop and route information, map your trip, save your favorites and track the current location of buses and access real time information.
