Thinking of a pool and trying to decide whether to wait for the right house with a pool or if I find the right house to add a pool. Most lot in non-HOA areas are large enough for a pool but what of the expense? permits? can it be well fed? While we are making final plans to leave New Orleans I was thinking of options in home ownership. We have decided a pool would be good for our old aching joints and like the convenience of having one at home. On the other hand I realize the added liability of having a pool and the possible consequence of higher homeowners insurance.

I would appreciate any tips and ideas. My guess it is easier and more economical to buy a house with one already but lately there are not too many available in my price range.

I would recommend buying a house with a pool already there. It is extremely expensive to put one in, well atleast income rich it is. Here, for a decent pool, you will spend upwards of over 50k. Not quite sure how much it would be in Florida but it can't be too much lower, especially after you hurricane proof it

It's about $30k. Most pools I've seen are small, 14x24. It's always cheaper to buy a home with an existing pool. Also, everything has settled, they've switched to salt water, and enclosed it. Look for a home built within the last 5-6 years. They'll be up to code and cheaper to insure.

Hurricane proof a pool? Did I miss something?

Buy the house you want and throw a hot tub on the lanai. Much cheaper!

My wife and I have been pricing out pools and for a 12 x 24 foot pool we have received estimates from 34 to 44 thousand...so I am sure that by the time they finish it will be 60....

We wanted a home with a pool as well but could not find a house we liked with one ..so we bought a house we liked and added a pool/spa after the sale. We shopped around and settled on a company that did many of the pools in our community. It was easy they got all the permits and in less than a month we had a pool/spa that we designed

If you buy it from the homebuilder it is a double mark up. Pool/spa is 25K to the builder then they mark it up when they sell it to you as an upgrade on the home. Unless you are trying to stuff the pool upgrade into your mortgage it will be significantly cheaper to build it directly with the pool builder after you close on the house. Adding options like screens, salt systems, heaters, automation really spirals the mark up as well!
