I thought the HOA covered the outside of the structure and insurance on the contents was the responsibility of the homeowner. Usually it's less expensive because it's the equivalent of renters insurance. Is this not the case in Florida?

NO... insurance on your dwelling is entirely YOUR responsibility on any single family - not attached - home.

If you own an attached townhome or condo --the building insurance will most likely be on the entire group of homes/condos. BUT.. please check your individual community since some have decided to do things differently.

That totally depends on what you ask for, where you live, what type of construction etc etc .

That's who the Independent Agent got for us 2 years ago. This year after seeing them not paying anything to a home owner in the Orlando area whose home is literally falling apart is sort of scaring me. News was sort of vague but the concrete blocks were shifting, disintegrating and the bricks were literally falling off the home. Might have been mention of a sink hole before I clued in when I hearfd Gulf Stream mentioned, but didn't show one so might have been under home. Home was declared unsafe to live in, but insurance denied them. Maybe they didn't pay for the sink hole clause or something but GS wasn't talking to reporters to explain why they denied. Wondering how hard it will be to get them to pay if something does happen to the house. I wish Nationwide was still in the state. They were very good after the 2004 hurricanes.
